Hopefully a sign that we are getting back to being run sensibly with an ambitious board. I'm slowly thinking that Carter has something about him and can be the new Peter Varney.
I'm not so optimistic I'm afraid. Having NJ on such a long term contract will be a good thing - if we're doing well or at least OK. On the other hand if the season goes wrong and we start getting battered regularly and slide towards relegation? It'll cost big money to get rid of him. The situation could turn toxic again. Let's be under no illusion. The Championship is a much tougher league than L1. There are some big, well funded and well run teams in it, who will take apart a weak side.
I am Mr glass-half-empty The last 11 years have done that. Been wrong plenty of times though, so NJ feel free to prove me wrong again. My only ask of next season is that Charlton don't go down again. 21st place will do.
Fair point, but making what appears to be a very good signing this early in the summer is a positive sign,+ we nicked him from under the noses of an established Championship club.
I hope the nicking him from under the noses of an established Championship Club is a true story, not a line being put out by certain sources to butter fans up. Sorry, I can't help it!
Good luck to him, I hope he works out for us. And it's very early days. Hoping for more and better over the next 8 or 9 weeks.
Personal likes & dislikes are of course different for each fan. I liked Chris Powell, though I know some fans didn't. I liked Lee Bowyer, though I can see he wasn't everyone's cup of tea. I can't say I like Nathan Jones. But I know a lot of fans do like him, and he is doing a solid job. If Charlton are consolidated in the Championship after a couple of seasons, my respect for him will grow. Not sure if I'll ever like him though. Unless he transcends the achievements of the other Gaffers I mentioned and begins to approach the level of the three best managers we have ever had. That will take many years, and require a promotion to the Premier League - or the winning of a Cup. But if it happens I can't imagine there'll be any Charlton supporters who don't warm to him.
I think he’s a nutcase but I can’t deny he’s done a fine job of things this last year. Keeping us up, his next goal, will reinforce his position as a good manager or a least a manager who’s doing a good job.
He has grown on me. Watching him run the touchline makes me like him even more. I agree he is a nutter tho!! And he is doing a good job our defence is awesome - Docherty in particular has vastly improved under him
