Right I've just about calmed down now after watching what I did yesterday. I've been a Gillingham fan for Twenty-Two years, appreciate that it's not as long as some, but yesterday was single handedly the worst refereeing performance I've ever seen. It's bewildering to think that Trevor Kettle, who was universally hated as a referee by lower league fans, somehow managed to have a son that could be even worse than him. Up until the red card for Hutton it was a nice open game. Once the ref makes the incorrect decision to send Hutton off (their lad had his back to goal and was closer to the centre circle than our box), he completely loses his head. Ridiculous decision after decision. Disallowed a goal for Grimsby which wasn't offside, then makes up for it by awarding them a penalty that was never a penalty, sends off Jonny Williams for the softest second foul you've ever seen, refuses to send off Kabia for Grimsby despite being on a yellow card and he made numerous fouls post being booked. It was such a one sided refereeing affair that we had Grimsby fans clapping off our players. The effort our lads showed despite playing against 12 men was incredible, Grimsby could only win through a penalty. We were robbed of an entertaining match of football from an incredibly incompetent referee and I seriously hope there's repercussions for his performance. I doubt there will be as the FA seems to have a superiority complex when it comes to their referees but yesterday was incredibly unjust. 1. Ethan Coleman - Covered every blade of grass yesterday, was absolutely spent by 85 mins but still kept running and hassling for the cause. 2. Glenn Morris - Made several good saves and showed he's still got it at 41. 3. Andy Smith - Felt Smith defended very well yesterday, headed everything, blocked everything he could, his best game for a while. Special mentions for our boy Sam Gale who had the better of his man all game, Elliott Nevitt who effectively had to play as a wide midfielder when he came on and did more than his fair share of defensive work and also Armani Little who again showed why we've missed him in the middle the last few weeks.
As soon as I saw that the referee was called Kettle, I just knew Gills were doomed.... His father suffered 'small-man' syndrome - and seemed to hate GFC... I never saw his dad give GILLS anything in many matches it has been my misfortune to watch ..... I dread the prospect of Kettle juunior ruining many more Gills matches. I will give my 3 as Morris 2.Coleman 3. Gale - despite the softest of 'infringement' which led to the penalty. I can only ask that the players give the same commitment - regardless of the identity of the referee....It's going to make team selection a problem next week - with Hutton, J.Smith & Gale all suspended.
