Absolutely disgraceful what has happened in Birmingham, banning fans from attending games. This shouldn’t be happening in our day and age. Villa should be ashamed of themselves, they should be fighting this, A sitting UK MP celebrates that Jewish fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv will be banned from attending a football match — simply because they are Israelis.
Yep,this is a real issue. Apparently the Police have decided to advise Villa that the prospects for potential violence around Villa Park, but also elsewhere in Birmingham, may reach levels they consider too dangerous. I say this is outragous.....the Police cope with derby matches all the time.....Villa v Brum,Brum v Wolves....us v Mags.West Ham v Millwall, etc etc. Football matches are there to be enjoyed by everyone......we all know passions run high and can spill into violence, but,it's a football thing.Maccabi are a club in the European scene, and their fans should be allowed to attend to support their club. If activists outside of the football fan fraternity want to make a political protest, they should be taken down.....it's not the place.
**** 'em, they behaved like animals in Amsterdam. Take a step back, take the politics out of it, and it's the right decision. The police have to safeguard the whole city not just the football stadium.
The celebrations by the community and their MP doesn’t surprise me one bit either. This needs overruling and quickly, we can’t have communities or MPs dictating which nationals can compete in sporting events around the UK. It’s not 1930s Germany
Yes, and Maccabi fans have a track record of appalling behaviour. Banning away fans who cause violent disruption is not without precedent or merit.
Perfectly fine for Celtic fans to go into cities that were bombed by the IRA and chanting their pro IRA songs, but we can’t possibly have Israelis into Birmingham… I’m fairly sure the police could put them in a bubble and take them from the airport to the ground and back. Why would they even consider that, it’s only them bloody Jews.
This is a no win situation for everyone ... ... sadly there'll be lots of shouting until no one can hear themselves speak. I'm going into my bubble on this one. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/7eFzMNghIdo?feature=share
Fair enough. Just make sure every team that has had trouble making supporters is also banned. Every team.
Get a grip mate! Away fans appalling behaviour is nothing new to us.....and in recent times has been dealt with reasonably well on the whole.
Every team that has supporters that cause trouble to that extent, yes. We went through the pain in the UK after Heysel.
The MP has been at this for a month. With a bit of help from Corbyn who I think it can be said is well known for his attitude to Jews. But ban them. Just ban all similar fans, and that is a long list.
Fair play to the government and every politician, from all parties who have called this out as a disgrace. This all boils down to a recurring theme that nobody dares mention. Senior government officials are set to meet later today to try to reverse the ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, a government minister has said this morning. Ian Murray, a minister in the culture department, tells Sky News that Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy and Home Office officials will be among those meeting to see whether there is a "way through" the ban. He separately tells BBC Breakfast: "It's the wrong decision in terms of the message that it sends out for antisemitism but it also [sends out] the wrong message to the entire country - that you would be banned from going to public events if you're of the wrong race, religion or creed."
Nah,that's a cop-out mate. This is a team competing in a European competition whose fans have every right to attend and it's down to us to police the situation,as they would do any derby match at Villa Park.....exactly the same as Villa fans would expect for their next away match in Europe.
Yep,time to stand up to pro-Palestinian activism. This is a football match being played in our country and we're not going to allow you to disrupt it.
Spot the odd one out. Sir Keir Starmer criticised the move, saying "we will not tolerate antisemitism on our streets" and that the role of police was "to ensure all football fans can enjoy the game, without fear of violence or intimidation". Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch branded the decision a "national disgrace" and suggested Sir Keir should act to reverse it. She wrote on X that Starmer should "guarantee that Jewish fans can walk into any football stadium in this country". "If not, it sends a horrendous and shameful message: there are parts of Britain where Jews simply cannot go." Ayoub Khan, the independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, welcomed the decision: "From the moment that the match was announced, it was clear that there were latent safety risks that even our capable security and police authorities would not be able to fully manage." Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar called the decision "shameful" and urged officials to reverse it. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said it was "a serious mistake," adding: "You don't tackle antisemitism by banning its victims. This decision must be reversed." Meanwhile, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the move "takes racial discrimination to a whole new level".
