I think I’ll have to avoid anything political from now on …

… I get people being fanatical about the football but some are really vitriolic about politics.

Some of it is really hateful which surprises me tbh.

Good post mate. I've dobbed in and out of the political debate on here from time to time, but, like you,I've found that,in the fervour to express their idealogical views some people have become abusive and hateful.
This is a forum primarily to enable fans of our wonderful club to debate issues around the club activities, both on and off the field, and, also to provide a platform for general discussion on other issues from the world we live in. I welcome all of this,as it often allows me to gain information and insight into the club and its' football, but also other aspects of life of which I may not have been particularly aware.
However, I'm not in favour of it being used as a propoganda machine to try to gain support for political views, which I understand can be genuinely held, but which degenerate much of the time into abusive contempt and downright hatred towards fan from fellow fan.
Surely, opportunities for discussion of that nature must exist elsewhere.

Felt that way in 2020 to be honest, feel ambivalent about it now. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Liar is a bit strong there like, miss quoted / attributed? Gobshyte, yeah, I'll accept that marra.

Apologies Roger, I attributed something to you incorrectly, I cannot find any trace of you saying posters had been chased off. I've edited my original post (which is still visible in your reply).

I think it’s fair to say that some do say there are posters who’ve been ‘chased off’ the board. Those saying that are often those who are the most abusive to other people.

If you dish it out you have to be prepared to take it in return …

… you can’t have it all your own way.

Sorry but there's something here that's becoming sick and, possibly, comes under the banner of 'racism'.

I'm a Geordie as are family in the Chopwell area who are Newcastle supporters going back 100 years.

This current stupidity, from Newcastle pubs, is childish and crass in my opinion.

It can only lead to bad feeling, bad reviews and damage to the premises which will be reciprocated I'm sure.

Seriously, is this what banter is reduced to, ffs it's pathetic and not the cracking NE humour I grew up with.

It's just sad mate, and typical Mags needing to try and belittle 'little old Sunderland' to make themselves feel better. I think they're getting worse because the majority of Sunderland fans just don't respond to it, because we know it's pathetic and just wouldn't lower ourselves to their level.

But what makes that non story worse, is the fact the Chronicle thinks it's 'newsworthy'!

That's the saddest thing isn't it, how can that paper have any self respect ...

... people in Newcastle support Sunderland, people in Sunderland are Geordies.

This stupidity will keep growing because they're absolutely terrified we'll beat them in the derby..

I'd given up on that idea, after the FA Cup match, but the gap has narrowed so much I think we can do it ...

... they won't enjoy going to Sunderland and they already know it.

It links in with my T Dan Smith post and the sense of Geordie superiority that it created over 50 years ago. The media fuel it with stuff like this because a certain chunk of their readers lap it up and believe it. "Newcastle is the greatest city in the country, the people who live there are the best, the football team is special and the envy of everywhere else. If you don't live in Newcastle or support the football team, you're inferior and need to be ridiculed". That's the message it sends out, but it's so short sighted and insular it's impossible to reiterate. One, they can dish this out but can't take their own short comings being handed back. Two, they can't cope if Newcastle (city or football club) is outshone by someone else doing something or getting something better than them. And there, by creating this division with all the people who don't identify as a Geordie or a mag, you're alienating a huge chunk of potential customers and pushing them towards your rivals. That loss of revenue could be vital in the future. And in the Chronicles' case, all for a handful of clicks for ad money. Sad doesn't do it justice.

It's a lack of education in parts, leading to an insular mentality which in itself leads to less well developed people being very easily led.

I was talking to one of these characters a couple of months ago, around the time players were rejecting them, left right and centre.

He really couldn't understand it, as he genuinely thought that Newcastle was in some way superior to almost all other places, in England and elsewhere .

I asked him had he ever been to say, Milan, or Málaga, Munich, Bologna, Madrid etc. Clearly he hadn't been anywhere but here.

He really thought that a city with a lot of nightclubs and people yah-hooing it on a weekend was a draw for a pro footballer.

    Beyond saving.

I've probably mentioned that my Mrs and her side of the family are scouse, not plastic I bought a shirt and tell everyone I support Liverpool type but born in Liverpool.

Her side of the family have said stuff about Newcastle ovet the years but always cause of my dislike for them. One thing that they couldn't believe over the whole Isak saga was that Newcastle fans were perplexed why he would want to move clubs as in their opinions they were as a big a club and all that other talking ****e they do! They seriously believe their club and city is as attractive to players with no roots in the area to some of the biggest clubs in the world (not to mention the North East as a area to live not being the most appealing to young multi-millioanires compared to other places in europe). I just said I had pointed their delusion out before but they hadn't had a reason to see it!

I used to work through Newcastle in my early 20's and worked with a Geordie lass who was seeing an Irishman, this would have been only a few years after the Roy Keane era, I met her boyfriend on a works night out and we got on well with him mostly talking about football, in passing I mentioned that quite a few Irish made there way to Sunderland to work in the shipyards (including my great-grandfather) and the Geordie lass pipes up, "why would they choose to go to Sunderland? It's a sh!thole", looked at her then at her boyfriend and said do you want her tell her what was happening to the Irish at the time?

Yes, some people really are that thick.

Mags talking about sh!tholes have obviously only ever lived in Jesmond Dene and not the slums all over the city.

I remember when Newcastle missed out as European Capital of Culture to Liverpool and the way some of them reacted. They went on as if it was a huge shock and couldn't understand why they weren't picked, that Newcastle was the best option. The Chronicle slagging Liverpool off because of a motorway cutting through the city, rough areas, reputation for Scally's and scrounging... No sense of irony about the central motorway, the Byker Wall/Walker. The whole Newcastle bid was based basically on it's nightlife. Liverpool called on the Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Echo and The Bunnymen, The Lightning Seeds. Newcastle pushed the Tyne Bridge, Liverpool called on the Albert dock, The Liverbird Building, The Cunard building, Liverpool port building, the two cathedrals, the philharmonic orchestra and philharmonic hall, St George's hall, the grand national, Ken Dodd, Alexie Sayle among dozens of comedians and actors from Liverpool. FFS they could even call on Doctor Who (Tom Baker) if they wanted. Newcastle had nothing to compare, they even ballsed up staging the Love Parade in the run up. When you stood the two bids side by side in comparison, Liverpool was miles ahead, a genuinely globally recognised city with a long cultural heritage, as opposed to a provincial English city with only limited cultural support. The Newcastle/Gateshead motto was "Newcastle/Gateshead buzzing", it probably should have really been "Newcastle/Gateshead - come and get pissed in the Bigg Market" because it was basically all about nightlife with the Sage and the Baltic tagged on.
