A historical night for The Faroe Islands! They hammered Montenegro 4-0 tonight in Tórshavn! and what a night of firsts it was.

    ■ It was their biggest ever result in World Cup qualifying history.

    ■ First time they have ever scored 4 goals in a competitive fixutre.

    ■ First time they have won back to back competitive games since 2020 (Nations League) and 1997 (World Cup qualifying)

    ■ First time beating a country ranked 50 places above them.

Goalscorer tonight, Árni Frederiksberg, used work as a frozen pizza salesman during his semi-pro football career.

Tonight will go down in Faroese football history. A fantastic result and statement.

Winning 3 and losing 3 in the group stages so far, Faroe Islands sit 3rd, 4 points off top.

They know they are extremely unlikely to go to the World Cup, but with games against Czechia (2nd) and Croatia (1st) to come, just imagine if they win both.

In front of just 2034 no doubt ecstatic fans. I wonder how many will claim "I was there when..." for years to come?

Lyndon Dykes scoring Scotland's third goal against Greece - the worst goalkeeper error I've seen since Gary Sprake was accused of match fixing.

Watched the Farnham v Sutton cup tie - a mighty effort by the lower ranked Farnham, who were unlucky to concede a 98th minute equaliser in the 3- 3 draw.

They're currently leading Czechia 1-0 with 20 minutes to go - certainly trying their hardest to qualify.

Very comfortable and easy for England again.

Last two qualifiers have been much better .

Impressive achievement from Cape Verde who are the second smallest nation to ever qualify.

Uzbekistan and Jordan will also be making their debut whilst South Africa heading through for the first time since 2010..

Born and bred in Ireland, plays for Shamrock, recruited for Cape Verde via LinkedIn, and now heading to the World Cup; Roberto Lopes has the most incredible football story

Roberto Carlos 'Pico' Lopes was born in Dublin to an Irish mother and a Cape Verdean father and has played his whole career in the League of Ireland, for Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers respectfully.

One day, after setting up a LinkedIn profile in college, he received a message from then Cape Verde coach Rui Aguas who had seen a post where Lopes had mentioned his Cape Verde heritage.

“Out of nowhere I got a message from the then-coach Rui Aguas, but he wrote to me in Portuguese. I thought it was spam and took no notice," the centre-back said.

“Then about nine months later, he messaged me back, saying, ‘Hi Roberto, have you had a chance to consider what I said to you?’

“I copied the message into Google Translate. And it basically said that we're looking at getting new players into the Cape Verde squad and would you be interested in declaring for Cape Verde?

“I was absolutely buzzing with that! I was like, yep, 100% I'd love to be a part of the squad.”

Six years later Lopes has gone on to appear 38 times for his nation and, after last night's win over Eswatini, will be off to the World Cup in 2026 after Cape Verde became just the second smallest team to ever qualify for the competition.
