Sunderland AFC and Netflix Partner to Showcase Club’s Iconic Moments

Sunderland, England – Sunderland AFC and Netflix have officially announced a collaboration to produce a documentary series celebrating the club’s most unforgettable moments. This partnership will bring the passion, drama, and history of Sunderland AFC to a global audience, highlighting the triumphs and tribulations that have defined the club.

The series will feature iconic moments, including their famous 1973 FA Cup victory against Leeds United, the 2022 Wembley play-off win to reach the Championship, the 1992 FA Cup run culminating in a quarter-final against Chelsea, and the 2016 Premier League survival with a crucial win against Everton.

    Historic Cup Victories

1973 FA Cup Final: The documentary will explore Sunderland’s historic FA Cup victory against a previously dominant Leeds United side, Ian Porterfield’s goal securing a 1-0 win, marking one of the greatest 'upsets' in FA Cup history and clinching Sunderland’s second FA Cup title.
1992 FA Cup Run: The series will highlight Sunderland’s memorable run to the quarter-finals, culminating in a thrilling replay against Chelsea at Roker Park. This campaign captured the hearts of supporters and showcased the team’s resilience.

    Promotion Success

2022 Wembley Play-Off Final: The documentary will feature the 2-0 win against Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley, securing promotion to the Championship and ending a significant spell in League One.
Tommy Watson’s Goal: The series will emphasize the importance of Tommy Watson’s goal in the play-off final, a moment that potentially saved the club from a longer absence from the Premier League.

    Memorable Premier League Performances

May 2016 Survival: The documentary will relive the dramatic 3-0 win against Everton, ensuring Sunderland’s Premier League safety and sending rivals newcastle and Norwich City down. The electric atmosphere at the Stadium of Light will be vividly recreated.
January 2012 Stunner: The series will showcase Ji Dong-won’s 93rd-minute winner against a Manchester City side that would go on to win the league title. The eruption of celebration at the Stadium of Light will be a highlight.

May 2016 Comeback vs Chelsea: The documentary will feature Sunderland’s comeback victory against Chelsea, with goals including a stunning Wahbi Khazri volley.

The Netflix series promises to be a comprehensive and captivating portrayal of Sunderland AFC, celebrating the club’s legacy and providing fans with an intimate look at the moments that have shaped its identity.

Very savvy by the club again. The game's growing in America and there's the Mexico link this year as well.
