Actually thinking about Newman and Redford, they are associated with a number of very prominent films, film festivals and cooking sauces. Yet they are also in my two favourite sports films - The Natural and Slapshot.

I thoroughly recommend The Natural, Spurf - it's much deeper than just a film about baseball.

Jane Goodall who taught us so much about our nearest relatives has died at 91. She made a difference

RIP Dame Jilly Cooper. The poshest of 'posh sorts'.

She liked to drink, swear and ride things...as posh sorts do. Unlikely to be of any use above and beyond those activities, but top notch at all 3 of their chosen 'specialities'.

She is an absolute spot-on lookalike/act alike/sound alike for my 5th (and current) m-i-l, who was 90 at the weekend. She is good at 3 things...

As the saying goes "**** or get off the potty " it looks like Brooklyn Earache has abandoned the potty , after reading about his exploits that could be very good news

330 mile round trip to Oxford yesterday for the start of term.
She’s got an informal dinner tonight before the BOP in the JCR and then to the Varsity Club
She has to buy subfusc for Matriculation this week <confused> <double>
God knows when they have time to do any work:confused:
It’s a different world. How long before we’re disowned as persona non grata? I’ll give it ‘til the end of the Michaelmas term (that’s early December apparently) <laugh>

At my current m-i-l's 90th, her older, Cambridge educated, son said grace in Latin...

Whereas, I ate bits of my dinner with my fingers and stole uneaten parts of neighbouring tables' cheeseboards...

There is definitely weird stuff to get used to. There is an old story that a student who had been a naval officer turned up for exams wearing his dress uniform rather than subfusc clothes and demanded that he was presented with a bottle of Madeira and on checking the exam regulations they discovered he was correct and went and bought him one. They subsequently fined him £25 for not wearing a sword as part of his uniform.

In Oxford the Trinity term rowing races are called Summer Eights but are held in May. Not to be outdone, the Cambridge equivalent are called May Races and are held in June.

He must've been furious. Good job he didn't have his sword with him...

I took my wife's Oxford educated friend to the old WHL and I got a bag of monkey nuts lobbed up to use on the Shelf ,he found this baffling that you could pass money via a bunch of ruffians and get a bag of nuts in exchange, I offered him some and he proceeded to eat them without removing the shells , when I offered him some more he refused stating they were a bit dry , his face was a picture when I pointed out that I removed the shell before eating, maybe I should have explained in Latin
