To what extent is the conservative party adopting a ‘one nationist’ approach?

One nationism is a paternalistic form of conservative politics that can be traced back to former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, who was in power in the late 19th century.
The main ideas of this are that the rich and more powerful classes should attend to the needs of those who are not as wealthy or powerful. This is known as Paternalism – it is like a father guiding a child in the right direction. This was adopted by conservative Prime Minister John Major in the early 1990s.
Another form of conservative politics is Thatcherism – named after Margaret Thatcher who ruled in the 1980s. This is contrasting to One Nationism as Thatcher famously said “There is no such thing as society” – Thatcher wanted people to help themselves rather than the state guiding them. As well as other ideas, Thatcherism also focused on strong Euro-scepticism and social conservatism, where Christian family values are promoted and there is an emphasis on tough law and order to keep citizens in order.
But with David Cameron’s Conservative Government of 2010 now the most popular party in the UK, to what extent is this part adopting a ‘One Nationist’ approach?

One reason which one could argue that the conservative party is adopting a ‘One nationist’ approach is the idea of ‘fraternity without state’. This is clearly Cameron distancing himself and his party from Thatcherism and echoes back to a One nationist because is promotes obligation and duty to be involved in a civic society, through family life and local communities. This is evident in Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ scheme, where he plans to decentralise government and create a nation of go-getters and do-ers.
This could be said to be one way in which the conservative party are adopting a One nationist approach, and abandoning Thatcher’s ideas.

However it could also be argued that the conservative party are not moving towards a one nationist approach, but actually moving towards Thatcherism.
This could be argued because of Cameron’s use of social conservatism to promote a strong sense of patriotism and national pride, an emphasis on tough law and order and traditional values (though he has distanced the party from ‘Christian values’ to make the party more accessible).
Strong national pride is displayed in Cameron’s euro-sceptical view and dislike of the European Union, as the conservatives are pressuring for a referendum on the EU.
This shows how the conservative party are not adopting a one nationist view, but alternatively one that is similar to Thatcherism.

Another way that the conservative party are moving away from the one nationism view is through the tax cuts and reduction in public expenditure that Cameron has emphasised in his new policies. Again, this is similar to the swift cut in public expenditure and tax cuts that Thatcher used in her time in power. Examples of these are the massive cut in public expenditure on all fronts, the rise in VAT tax and a cut in corporation tax for big businesses. These all bear resemblance to Thatcher’s taxation policies and so it can be said therefore that this shows how the conservatives are abandoning a One nationist approach and moving towards Thatcherism.

Deregulation is considered to be a feature of Thatcherism, and the newly elected Conservative government are focusing on deregulating in many areas, for instance the economy. They have pledged to "enforce a new approach to new laws and regulations, ensuring that their costs are being properly addressed across the entire British economy", and have promised to use a ‘one in, one out’ system to prevent any further growth in regulation. This shows how the conservative government are adopting a one nationist approach because they are adopting a more Thatcherist approach with the use of deregulation.

Therefore it can be argued that the conservative party now does not follow one set form of conservatism, it is a blend of both one nation conservatism and Thatcherism, however it seems to be more dominantly Thatcherism. This is clear because although small steps have been made to retain a one nation conservatism view through schemes such as the ‘big society’ and an encouragement in a unified society, many other aspects of the conservative party display Thatcherite qualities – for instance the euroscepticism and strong patriotism, and tax and public expenditure cuts.
