Given the strength of our second team I am looking for much better cup runs this year.

Mikel Merino scored a superb hat trick against Turkey yesterday <laugh>. His poaching and goalscoring instincts are top notch. I am convinced he's better suited as a forward/striker for us than a midfielder. The composure and precision on those finishes are actually excellent.

He definitely has an eye for goal - probably moreso than any other in the squad.
Need to find a way to include him in a more forward position - he's not anywhere near as useful in a defensive role.

It's funny I was thinking the same thing, he's actually better as a striker than a midfielder.

Some club related news from a couple days ago.

Tim Lewis is leaving the Arsenal board and Richard Garlick has become the CEO.

The three new appointments to the board are Ben Winston, Otto Maly and Kelly Blaha.

Some very sad news regarding ex-Academy player Billy Vigar, who tragically passed away following a brain injury during a game for Chichester City. Thoughts and prayers with his family.

Excellent news confirming Saliba's contract extension, especially amidst the concrete links to Real Madrid, who have made no secret of their admiration for the player.

That's both Gabriel and Saliba we've tied down to long-term deals this Summer/Autumn, on top of Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly.

Apparently Saka's one is close also and there's one more mystery player who's in line for a contract renewal too...this is all very positive stuff <ok>.

    Massive deal.

Turned down Madrid to sign a new deal. Best CB on the planet - still only 24.

I remember when Saliba was loaned out, Arsenal fans saying he hated Arteta and would never play for us... then that he'd leave.
He was managed perfectly, in truth. He had some major flaws in his game as a youngster but also had the huge potential he is now close to fulfilling, but Arteta did the right thing by not throwing him in. To Saliba's credit also, he was patient and accepted it, despite being frustrated.
Top class player who will improve and also a top class attitude.
