It’s inevitable at this point as they try to move some people out of high cost low quality hotels and Ukrainians out of B and B’s. I don’t think anyone is in denial that the numbers coming in are too big. It’s a complex thing to resolve of course which won’t be solved by lying about ducks and swans and chasing people who have lived here for decades and have British families. The difficulty is for this government / to an extent any new government / I’d argue even any programmme of work, the policy change starts to be seen further ahead when it’s often drawing to a close. They are firmly playing catch up on a policy thats had significant underinvestment. I think your underlying point though is that things aren’t easy for British people trying to start their life. I said on here the other day, my kids are in their early mid twenties and have in part given up hope on some of the rites of passage we expected. If we want redirect funding to give our young people a positive existence we need to think about what we accept. Immigration is a factor, many things are a factor, but not the significant factor.

 

I am sorry but this needs saying. I am a socialist and believe everyone has the right to a home, job, healthcare etc. But this economic migrant crisis caused by Brexit, Farage and most of all The Tories has to stop. Our infrastructure cannot cope with the population increase it is causing. Housing, Work and the NHS are bursting at the seams. There is already discontent, marches, people posting flags all over the place. When indigenous citizens keep seeing people from other countries being considered before themselves they will resort to depths they would never have dreamt of previously. We are preparing the way for the opportunistic fascists to take over in the shape of Nigel Farage and his Deform party. I fear for democracy, liberty and personal freedoms.

 

I generally agree but losing human rights can’t be option when the evil billionaires are hoovering up the media and controlling our democracy. We have to get their riches to everyday people because typo do nowt good with it. I’d tax the living **** out of people like that personally. Not the 2% people speak of. There also the issue of how we sort out the migrant issue. How do we get the hotels empty without putting them somewhere else. How do we stop them travelling during global war, dictatorship, environmental harm, increase in poverty. There has to be a mature conversation about why and how not simpleton answers that are bluff for power.

For those who say it’s all young men, two women and a child died crossing. Poor things. Another reason to sort this. Sort the gangs, prevent the crossings at source as much as is possible, create safe processes for people to apply.

 

Whilst I feel sorry for the people concerned, it is akin to a burglar being killed by the XL bully pet of the owner of the house he is breaking into. Don't break in and no harm will come to you. Break in and it's your own fault if harm comes your way.

 

All heart you. So make some safe ways of doing it then they won’t have to do it. Manage it. That’s the way to smash the gangs.

 

They were breaking the law by coming across on a boat. Nobody forced them to do it. Nothing to stop them applying via the correct channels.

 

There aren’t any correct channels is my point. They ended when Brexit happened. The only way to get here is that way. Not sure why two women and child would be so desperate - trafficker lies, promise of income through modern slavery, existing family members here - who knows but they must have really needed it. The two women were Somali so we know there’s a civil war there.

 

So what is wrong with France, there is no war there as far as I know. Germany is safe, Belgium the same. No need for risking your life on a dinghy needed.

 

In my experience either; to see family members, existing kids, a place to stay, a husband or sibling here. Or promise of gold from smugglers, most likely is the former but smugglers offer them slaver. Also some is to flee certain people in French (or other) camps or even cities. They’re not safe places they end up. I know people who wanted to flee the gang lifestyle in Lyon and then Paris. They often just want better things. They’re not all evil, trying to make out grannies suffer.

 

So it is not to escape war/persecution then? Glad we cleared that up. It's a lifestyle choice.

Which is why digital ID is important IMHO. Macron was right, we need to reduce the 'pull factor' and make the UK a less desirable place to live, unless of course you are genuinely fleeing persecution in which case you will accept the conditionally placed upon you.

The announcement today from Shabana Mahmood re integration to achieve British nationality is long overdue. This, along with the one in one out scheme (if ramped up) will make people think twice before handing over cash for a life risking channel crossing. We finally seem to be heading in the right direction but still some way to go.

Thoughtful post,much of which I agree with.
It's my view that the Brexit referendum was seen by the majority of people who voted leave as a vehicle to express their entire unhappiness with what they see as a breakdown of their community,social and cultural habitat,due to large numbers of immigrant people placing vast,unsustainable burdens on an already crumbling infrastructure,a sense of which had been growing for many years,and which has made going about normal everyday life increasingly difficult.
The implementation of the result of the vote has been a disaster,mainly,in my view,because the Govt.asked a certain question,but got the answer to a different question. As a result of this failure by the mainstream parties,many people see a move to the right in support of Farage as an opportunity to have another attempt to express their dissatisfaction and frustration. I hope they don't take up that opportunity,but that will likely depend on the emergence of a credible alternative,not remotely visible to many as yet.
Most of the left leaning folk who post on here,ad nauseum,generally supported by their comrades turning up in mini groups to support mainly idealogical views,often arrogantly and sometimes ignorantly expressed,seem to focus most of their attention on the financial and economic environment....important,I know....but often with not enough emphasis being placed on the impact of the loss of community and culture which,in my view, has at least as much,if not more, importance.
This country has lacked effective leadership for decades and every PM from Major onwards should thank their stars they weren't born 500 years ago,or their heads would have been on a spike outside the Tower of London long since.
As a result of widespread Govt.neglect over many,many years, I think our country has too many problems which are largely unsolvable and I don't see any improvement in our prospects any time soon,I'm sorry to say.
