Those of us that have been following NZ's FA Cup thread would probably have seen him play on YouTube as Chichester took Whitstable Town to a replay. As I progressed up the leagues refereeing, I was always nervous about the concrete path and barrier around the pitch, often only a metre or two from the touchline. The only surprising thing to me is that this hasn't happened more often. Given amount of money in the game, this is a wholly avoidable tragedy as: the money is there; the will to redistribute it to make the game safe, is not. Just like society in general.
the advertising hoardings (mostly electronic these days) around the professional pitches are also dangerous I feel….the other week against Blackburn Irankunda was shoved into them and stayed down for a bit, and I also remember Nathan Ake going over the hoardings at the vic end of the GT stand which as you know Fez (you did a dissertation I think) has a drop of about 1 metre the other side - again gladly he got up and was ok there was also a young player who died in the Sussex county league a few years ago in the same circumstances what the answer is I don’t know - push the barriers further back and have the ‘playground tarmac’ (the stuff that is squishy) instead of concrete??b
Old Trafford is another one, a steep bank down, I remember at least one of our players in recent years being helped into the advertising hoardings, possibly Deulofeu. The seating is arranged so the front row can see the far goal line / touch line, so the seats are often below pitch level to achieve this. The arrangement behind is so it achieves the same result, and so on. The consequence of this is that the rake (angle of the rise in seating level) starts shallow and steepens the further back you sit. Upper tiers are usually steeper (so you can see over the head of the person in front) often at a single angle, two steps or three to each row. This was the main thrust of my dissertation. Next time you are in an older theatre, you may notice the seat rows are staggered, allowing the viewer to look past the person in front who is expected to sit still. Doesn't happen in sports! The design principles are the same though.
Athletics stadia need to be higher up to start as at the furthest point out eyes won't be able to discern what is going on, the track is oval of course. Athletics stadia should never be used for football or rugby or any other team field sports.
