I think you are right. The Europeans are definitely more up for it and look like a team, willing to fight for each other. Some of the Americans have been a disgrace, especially Scheffler, the best player in the world, who looks like he doesn't want to be there.
It always amazes me when sportsmen say that. There are footballers the same who play but don't watch other games and not particularly interested, it's just a job to them.
It'll be interesting to see how the Americans play as an individual now it's all about personal pride. There are a lot of big ego's in this particular U.S side and I think it's let them down in the pairings... They play for themselves today and there's no-one else to blame. There's zero chance of them lifting the Cup today but they could prolong the European celebrations a bit if they play to individual ability.
Loved the moment Justin Thomas sunk his putt then unloaded a load of expletives in passion, only to be silenced by Shane Lowry following suit, and giving it back, fabulous stuff, the states have a mentality that they have the biggest and best in everything, good to see the Europeans handing them their arse on a plate.
Are my calculations correct ?...That Europe needs 2.5 points from the 12 matches to retain the cup. That's 5 matches halved. Might not even have to win a match.
Yup, as we are the current holders of the trophy we only need to draw the tie, so 14points to retain it, 14.5 to win the tie.
I'm not sure it was that clear cut? Isn't he on record as saying that his family are more important to him and if it ever became a choice he'd choose his family.? He's the best player in the World for a reason, albeit he's had an awful tournament here. But it's worth bearing in mind that other greats haven't adapted to Ryder Cup golf,Tiger Woods hardly excelled either.
Strange that the states no 1 world golfers, Woods and Scheffler struggle in a team environment were as our prev no.1s Faldo and Ballesteros excelled within it. Says it all really
If Hovland isn't playing, will that all change due to there only being 11 singles matches today? If we're one game short then the maximum points are reduced to 27 as opposed to 28. I'm assuming the target will be 13.5 if this is the case? *Edit,on reading the rules, that particular game will be halved.*
To be fair to Justin Thomas and I take my hat off to him,he was the only U.S player telling the crowd to give it a rest when the Europeans were trying to putt.
I admit I was 'condensing' what he said but I think it reveals he doesn't have the passion or obsession for the game that others do and you probably need that in a Ryder Cup comp. He's been compared to Tiger in the press and doesn't like it!
Injured, apparently in this case his match is halved. Should Hovland withdraw, the little-known ‘envelope rule’ will be called into action. When captains make their singles selections, they hand in a sealed envelope containing the name of one of their players. If a golfer withdraws, the opposition’s envelope is opened, and the named player will also sit out of the singles. Their match is halved. If no player withdraws, the envelope remains sealed.
Dunno, either way he was picked to go out last so we likely won't need him to do very much although I'm sure he won't be thinking that!
