One of my best mates is from the dark side, though he is eminently sensible.

He thought we'd get something today, he said 2-1 to us or 1-1. He is also mightily impressed with our transfer business. Like some on here (and unlike me), he knows a lot about European football and thinks the value we have got is ridiculous. The money means nothing to me as it happens, but I do know we have had an absurdly high strike rate this summer, and actually for a long time.

What days.
We spent £180 million but got the value of more like £250 million. Some business there.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris speaking to Sky Sports: "I think it [digging in] is part of our identity. We know to be competitive in this league we have to work together, to suffer together. I am really proud for that because we defended really well and our five subs helped a lot. With the ball I think there is still room for improvement. We had the opportunities to build up the play more comfortably and progress through the pitch a bit better but we still have many things to learn."

On Granit Xhaka: "He is really smart, he knows how to manage a situation in real time. He is a future coach I think so we need to use him with this power, this strength because it is so important to a young squad like ours.

"I hope he will play for Sunderland for a long time because we need him on the pitch. On the bench you can't have the same influence and I hope he can keep this consistency for the full season."

On what he has created at Sunderland: "It is hard to win a game but we are sticking with our gameplan and giving this level of energy, even when it is not perfect - I think it is a key point of our identity. If we can keep improving, we will have a few surprises."

On whether the start has left him surprised: "We are not complacent. We do not want to give something to the opponent. If we don't work properly, if we are not at our best we will be punished. We are happy to have 11 points this evening but at the same time we need many more points to stay in the league so step-by-step."
