From what I remember, we conceded a lot of goals down there in the late 80s - worst was the 6-2 defeat.

He really was crap, wasn't he? I have no idea what he is doing for at least 3 of those goals. Obviously never heard of trying to narrow the angle for the 5th. It was like having Paddy McGuinness in goal

 

Certainly up there amongst the worst keepers I’ve seen in a City shirt. Richard Wright? Had him in loan from Ipswich I think, he was ****ing awful as well.

 

He got worse. Seemed decent at first (88-89) - remember him saving a pen v Sunderland (actually some of the Sunderland fans I knew had some time for him and he was, at some early point, an England U21).

We had a few decent loans in to replace him - forget their names now but there was a young kid from Spurs who did well. I think we almost signed Jim Leighton too but it never came off.

I would say Hesford is up there with the likes of Scott Thompson and Bracey as the ****test senior GKs in my time.

Best: Norman/McGregor/Myhill - probably in that order. I know Norman never played top flight for us, but if he had, he would have been great I am sure.

 

Does anyone remember the home game when Hesford was beaten from about 35 yards, he just couldn't get down to the ball. After that the other team kept shooting from about 35 or 40 yards. It was embarrassing like when an outfield player goes in goal.

I thought the same about Ian McKechnie. I know he was a crowd favourite and I myself as a kid threw oranges into the net for him but was he a good keeper? Great long kick on him and he could bounce the ball in the opposition box kicking the ball from his hands, don't remember us ever scoring from one of them though.
Massive and popular character at the club too, but again his goalkeeping? We had to score two goals to get a draw in those days. I didn't realise it at the time watching the Wagstaff and Chilton team from behind the goal on the South Stand but we did seem to concede goals at an alarming rate. Remember a 6-2 drubbing at Brum when we actually played very well and a 5-4 defeat at Ipswich, four away goals and we didn't even get a point! Have a looks at some of the old City clips on Youtube and make your own minds up. The Stoke FA Cup 6th Rd game in 70/71 is a good example. Two up and lost 3-2, I'm sure McKechnie actually dives after the ball is in the net for one of them.
I still liked the man.
But agree 100% that our worse keeper without doubt was Ian Hesford. Remember him letting in one howler from a distance and looking straight away at the Kempton shame faced for their reaction. He was awful.
Also remember Bransholmes Number One, Steve Wilson, doing tipple tails in celebration when he kept goal for Macclesfield at Boothferry Park when they knocked us out of the league cup.

 

I don't think Richard Wright from Ipswich ever played for us, he was a decent keeper from what I remember.

 

In a thrashing at Pompey (maybe Ternent's last game) it was reported on RH that Colin Clarke rounded him twice for one of their goals.

Never seen the goals from that game and am assuming it was a liberal take of 'rounding twice' - but given some of his performances - it does sound believable.

He was rather rotund.

 

I think the Jak deserves an honourable mention. Didn’t start off well, but certainly ended brilliantly. I wouldn’t disagree with your selection, but would out McGregor ahead of Norman.

 

And you’re right hesford was actually the England U21 keeper at one time
