My unpopular literary opinion is 1984 was a quite good book massively over-lionised because just about everyone had to read it at 15 and we try and shoehorn parts of it into what’s happening today whether it makes real sense or not while ignoring the swathes of it that aren’t at all.

 

Probably the best explanation of what I've seen going on. I hadn't attached a year to it, simply because we weren't born then, but I often felt it was like how people use to portray the USSR.

If the card comes in I will accept it, it is what it is, but in the future and expecially the way politics is so divided these days, I can imagine what it evolves into being abused. Imagine if someone like Hitler had this capability...

• Jewish people had to carry identity cards which showed a ‘J’ stamp.
• Jewish children were denied education and banned from schools.
• Jewish men had to add ‘Israel to their name; women had to add ‘Sarah’.

And with enforcing your population to all have ID cards, you can carry out point three in any scenario quite easily.

 

Looking at it from a migrants / asylum seekers perspective remembering it's on the back of migration the government plan to bring this in, it will exclude them from places so now who is implementing facism lol.

If ID cards are really about making life harder for migrants, I don’t see any electoral advantage at all to Labour in that. Immigration is strong territory for Reform, while the NHS, education, public services and workers rights are strong territory for Labour. So instead of obsessing about immigration, Labour should be trying to drag the political debate onto that territory, especially the NHS where waiting times are already coming down.

ID cards are gesture politics imo, a gimmick that both the dangers and benefits of which are equally exaggerated. Personally I instinctively recoil at the prospect, but mostly it’s just a meh idea. Like, what is the ****ing point?

 

Norway has had electronic IDs for ages, Brits are just terrified of everything.

 

I don't think anyone is terrified of anything, it's just questioning the compliance of it, and lazy on your part not to debate it but poke. As I've also said it's being introduced to single out migrant identity, in any other name people would be shouting out facists.

We just keep making the government and police states job easier for them, so we can apply 'if you have nothing to hide' as well, I just think it's going down a very dangerous road that people like ourselves will not have to account for in the future when it's abused, and it will be abused at some point in the future.

There's a time and place to debate things on Not606 and everyone on here with some experience knows it. When you pop on here and see multiple posts of the most nightmarish scenarios being repeated, including Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, you realise there isn't going to be a debate.

All I can say is I am one of the few that live in a country, one I feel is more democratic than the UK which uses electronic IDs, has done for a long time and it's way better. It streamlines everything into a single usable app that just makes it so simple to access everything you need, here your bank uses it, the tax agency, the hospitals, everything.

Illegal working and illegal migration are significantly more difficult, it's to the benefit of 90% of the people who live and work in the country.

If people don't want fascists making everything worse, than I suggest people just stop electing ****ing fascists and perhaps on occasion check who they're actually voting for or better yet, actually bother voting.

 

When I call my family back home and the first thing they ask me is "do you have many muslims in norway" I know something is going seriously wrong, it's like calling an insane asylum

I'd argue you are in a country that is probably more racist than the UK, maybe that's why you like it, that's why you prefer the all in one ID system, because it roots our and segregates those who are less welcome. You might like to think you are in a tolerant nation but does that actually meet the reality of what's going on, I'd say no, I'd suggest everything you have given is a good reason not to be a facist and reject what you clearly adore.
