In November 2023 an independent commission found Everton guilty of exceeding the three‑year loss ceiling of £105 million by roughly £19.5 million, and the club was initially docked ten points – a sanction later trimmed to six on appeal. The penalty prompted a wave of potential legal challenges from clubs that believed they had been denied earnings as a result. Burnley, which finished two places and four points behind Everton, launched proceedings, while Leeds United – narrowly missing safety by a single point and one league position – weighed a similar claim. Leicester City, Southampton and Nottingham Forest also signalled interest. Morning chaps. Looking forward to the Bournemouth test on Saturday Fair to say if we get a result, we can be hopeful of giving a lot of teams a right good game. I don't give a damn about anyone who's left the club for whatever reason. Its all part and parcel of the modern game
Quite frequently in life, well intentioned ideas that look good on paper are rendered farcical in practice.... in real world conditions where the flaws seem obvious with the benefit of hindsight. I can't say for sure that PSR was either well-intentioned or good on paper... but as soon as you set rules and guidelines for anything, people do their level best to find loopholes, and work every angle to their advantage. If you're going to do this sort of thing you need to have thought of ALL the possible get arounds, keep the premise as simple as possible so there's no grey areas that are open to interpretation, have clear penalties that are sufficient to stop it in the first place... and the balls to carry them through. In a world governed by moneymen and lawyers, I'd say that's nigh on impossible. Especially in a global business with diluted ownership and collusion amongst clubs.
I wonder over a period of a few seasons will it begin to iron itself out as teams have to start replacing the likes of Haaland. Villa certainly feeling the pinch big time. Maybe if we could hang on two or three seasons we might start closing the gap on quite a few clubs. Probably wishful thinking
Another big test... aren't they all. Bournemouth the name says... this is a fixture we should be targeting a win from. Sadly, Bournemouth the team are annoyingly good. I see this as a really difficult fixture, but hopefully we come into it with confidence high. Leeds approached Iraola to replace Marsch, he would have been a great choice as his approach suits the same kind of playing staff we had at the time - and he likes the organised chaos of an aggressive press. He's proved his approach can work in the PL - he's done a great job at Bournemouth. He played under Bielsa and took a lot, but not all, into his playing style. In my view we struggle when sides press us high, Bournemouth are really good at creating chances from winning possession back. Interestingly, so have we been this year. Leeds and Bournemouth are the top 2 sides for defensive SCA (shot creating actions dontcha know), ie defensive action leading to a chance. In short i think Bournemouth are all wrong for us and this may be a game where we're more effective when they have the ball. Good test for Farke.
Hope you're right, it certainly seems like a bunch of clubs are taking the potential consequences seriously which is something... just feels like the big clubs have walked all over it. I think we could close the gap on the 'midtable' clubs in a few seasons.. problem for midtable clubs is you're only one one bad season from disaster.
Morning all. As Simon Jordan says, PSR may eventually be the thing that kills the success of the premier league as the most watched league in the world as it is designed to stifle competition and keep the big boys rewarded. Once the competitive nature of the division is over, as the other big European leagues have found, interest wanes and the money stops rolling in. It’s why the likes of Madrid wanted the super league. As for Bournemouth, I didn’t realise they were going so well, might have to rethink my prediction on the correct score/scorer thread
