Not the poster but thename used by Sunderland Echo sports writes for decades when ever they reported on trhe club? Any body got any idea about how the name came about?
I think the name derives from Greek mythology where Argus was an all-seeing creature with many eyes. From that it is pretty obvious why the name could be adopted to the world of sports journalism...
Think Reg is right, I seem to recall the question being answered years ago in the Echo itself. Or................... please log in to view this image
I believe that in the context of sports journalism, Mr White's explanation is most probably correct. The Argus of my youth was a schoolteacher called Rendall who lived at the Bents near Whitburn and he did all SAFC match reports for the Sunderland Echo in the fifties and sixties. I met him once and at the time I thought I was meeting royalty - such were those simple times.
Argus (or Argos) Panoptes (to give him his full name)was was a giant in Greek mythology. The Panoptes part of the name translates as all seeing.
I believe the Argus butterfly, although rare, is found in the area - hence the name of the pub in Peterlee.
I'm not sure but they are all over the place these days and a big bonus with the Christmas shopping to be fair. You just select out of the catalogue, write it down, pay for the goods at the till and wait for your number to be shouted out.................. Areet settle down, some daft bugger had to and it might as well be me. Lol
The mentioning of the word 'Argus' revives childhood memories when I was living with my folks in Worcestershire, my Father would always ask me to fetch him the pink 'argus' (from our local offy) which was a weekly Saturday evening rag, always printed right after the result's came in on the saturday, for me in those day's a great read. Not sure if the paper was sold countrywide just for the midland's area I think?
