And using illegal migrants as an excuse to implement this is nothing but a ****ing joke. We shouldn't have let the ****ers in in the first place if they are coming across the channel on a dinghy, leaving a safe country. Probably missing something but what's going abroad got to do with child benefit? Do agree with your overall point though.
I think people are only allowed to be out the country for a set amount of time. So by checking all claimants travel details they can tell the length of time you've spent abroad.
I know my lad and partner don't get child benefit for my grandson, so I'm assuming it's means tested on household income these days, and of course the child limit cap these days. Hence for those that do claim, there is probably something that says you have to be resident in the UK for x amount of weeks for the year. Thought I best look it up, apparently eight week rule.. 1. Comparison of Data: A pilot project, involving the Public Sector Fraud Authority, Home Office, and HMRC, compared claim records with international travel data. 2. Identification of Potential Non-Entitlement: Where the data showed a claimant had left the UK for more than eight weeks (the general rule for continued eligibility), investigators would perform manual checks. 3. New Specialist Team: Following the successful pilot, a larger team of investigators will use international travel data to identify claimants overseas who may no longer be entitled to the benefit. Key eligibility rule Generally, you are not eligible for Child Benefit if you have been outside the UK for more than eight weeks, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
If I thought that the best way of getting them out of the situation was for me to go the difficult route and them follow on legally then yes I definitely would. I support the government rules for migrants applying to work in the UK and bring their families. I don’t think these rules should apply to approved refugees or the dependents, or for that, the foreign dependants of British nationals returning to reside in the UK.
And even the remaining total were mostly a misunderstanding of the rules, than actually committing a crime. oh give over it's hardly a difficult rule to understand but currently don't have direct access to the detail, they have to request it from the claimants and are then allowed to ask questions around any transactions that have been disclosed. The fraud depts can access full details without clts knowledge and have been able to for at least 25 years but do need a case to have been raised to give the justification . edit: and the legislation doesn't give Govt depts access that they don't already have it just makes banks flag up possible fraudulent claims
That was the governments wording not mine. and you can only know about the rules if you've been told them or looked them up. Would your average person going away for 8 weeks think to look up if they are still entitled to child benefit, I doubt it would even cross their mind. And either way most people didn't break any rules, so what gives government the right to snoop at their ****ing travel details without any notification or permission to do so. Thing is mate because you worked in benefits, you seem to think it's ok to treat people this way, it's not, if you suspect fraud, approach it head on don't go snooping into hundreds of thousands of peoples personal data for a just in case scenario....which is also now being expanded. As you go on to say, they need justification, there was no justification whatsoever for snooping at totally innocent people.
Yeah because you've worked in benefits and even sound like the sort of **** they would employ. Thing was most people had done nowt wrong, some probably had never even travelled, for the ones that did, did other parents use to check before they travelled abroad if they could still have the child benefit, when it was dished out to even more than 2 kids in a family, I bet no one ever checked as it wasn't means tested until 2013. This is why this **** happens, because ****s like you think it's ok, well it's ****ing not.
How about reeling in the big companies who dodge tax than go after the poorer people in society, and treat them like ****ing criminals when they've done nowt wrong. It's not acceptable, I don't know why it's become acceptable to snoop and pry in this way. Yes there are people that buck the system, but most of us know someone who has, and it certainly aint the ones this government is after. This is the political agenda all the time, let's go after pensioners and benefits.
Even for the ones that they caught, what about the 197,000+ that were perfectly legal, where's the right in that, prying into their lives, I can't believe people actually accept this ****.

Yeah they knew you was a **** alright, no doubt about that. What do you mean give over, the point here is that over 197k didn't deserve to have their personal records checked for any reason whatsoever, just because some lazy **** couldn't be arsed and do the job properly, and instead blankets everyone until proven otherwise...that's not how fraud investigations should work, by means of big brother. It's pure laziness, go and investigate the real fraud and do your job properly.
I genuinly don't get why all this government snooping has become normalised and people happily accept it. It's not like we are seeing the benefits of it, because the people they should be going after they don't. So while Mrs. Smith is having her 2 weeks holiday checked this year, for the pittance of child benefit, our deputy prime minister was commiting tax avoidance of £40k I thought Labour were going after all the PPI stuff, how we doing on that to date, how many millions or billions are still missing. What about companies like Amazon, what we doing to deal with making them pay more tax....but **** yeah, let's go after Mrs Smith the lone parent with a kiddy to support, **** off with this bolloxs.

Whatever happened with all the billions debt associated with covid, it's like no one talks about it anymore, not even Labour. I never hear anyone saying well we can't afford this because of the billions owed from covid, it's like that blackhole mysteriously disappeared.
