McCarthy hasn't played regular football for about 3 years and people want to suddenly start him in the derby - that is just asking for trouble.
I don't think Baz is great at crosses either and gets stuck to his line a bit too much. I don't recall McCarthy being too shaky v Northampton? And he was excellent against Norwich. Not really arsed about a long back and forth on this though. For me the question is who would the skates rather face? And I reckon they'd probably prefer Baz.
Years ago, I remember seeing a vid of a Stamford Bridge Groundsman rolling the pitch after Chelsea had beaten someone The away fans had been kept in and were waiting to be released He was riding up and down towards and away from them and every time he arrived at their end he stuck the Vs up and turned around again
Well done, lads. Great job. Really excellent work there. Now our young, raw, mistake-prone, ex-Pompey goalkeeper, has the backing of Tom. Wonderful. What could possibly go wrong now? Stick to f*cking puns guys. They're there for a reason.
If, as many people suspect, Bazunu is really a sleeper agent and his main purpose is to be just good enough for us to keep him at #1 until such time as there is a derby match and / or play off final and then play the worst ever game of his life then we actually want Tom's ringing endorsement so that he fails in that intended purpose and plays a game that will go down in hallowed history as the pinnacle of goalkeeping. Then he'll disappear in a fishing boat related incident on the solent involving a plucky herring never to be seen again... or the fact I was coding until 3AM this morning followed by needing to be up at 6 as I forgot to put the bins out has left my brain a bit tender.
And this McCarthy vs Bazunu argument is exactly why we should have bought a capable keeper pushing Bazunu ...
Bazunu has been good this season. How about we stop overanalysing every goal he concedes to find a way to make it his fault? Good finishing is good finishing and that is what he has conceded so far.
And I would agree - IF we had sold Ramsdale. That we didn’t makes what you suggest practically impossible, as any incoming keeper would know that they would move further from being number one should we get promoted.
I would've gone for the loan move on Carl Rushworth for the year, personally. He clearly just wanted to get out and play in the Champ for a year and it would've worked for all parties (except Baz and Macca, one of whom would've needed moving on - probably Baz on a loan). Decent get for Coventry
Makes you wonder why we didn’t just sell him unless Newcastle didn’t want to buy outright. We’ve tied our own hands. Unless we specifically didn’t want to have to also invest in this position this summer
Yeah I said at the time I thought it was a bit odd to loan him and would be better to sell. Doesn't seem like it was a great move for him either with him being second choice.
I think it's better for us to loan. If we go up, we have a brilliant PL keeper, if not then we just sell next season and if Newcastle don't use their option we can sell to someone else and likely make more overall as Newcastle paid £4m just for the loan fee.
I can understand the club trying to keep their options open next season but it just left everyone in a bit of a limbo going into next season. Ramsdale would have stayed if we stayed up but we didn't and if we go up next summer there is no guarantee he's back if Newcastle exercise any options or another team take a punt on him and if we don't go up he'll be off anyway. Bazunu is playing better this season and a solid successful season will do him the world of good, raise his stock a bit but it must be in the back of his mind that no matter how well he plays if we get promoted, next season he is likely #2 again so will he want out now that he's shed a bit of the stigma around him? McCarthy is on the end of his career and his recent contract fits all we need him for - a solid understudy - and likely all he really wanted too. That would continue on to next season anyhow. Don't need to consider Long in this. When we go up this season I can see a scenario where we have us having to find two goalkeepers. Ramsdale's done well enough and Newcastle have bought him. We then replace him with A.N.Other PL goalkeeper and then Bazunu wants out as he's back to #2 again and off the back of a promotion season he has enough credit for another PL team to take a punt.
We don't know the terms of the loan deal. It wouldn't surprise me if Newcastle's option is only active if we don't get promoted and perhaps the loan fee is reduced if we go up too. The only thing we know for certain is that if we sold him then he definitely wouldn't be with us next season, whereas the loan at least makes it a possibility.
Bazunu has to play. Everyone knows the first rule of football is players score goals against their ex clubs.
I don't usually make predictions on Saints results but we're going to win this one aren't we? I have to admit I had never heard of any of the new signings before. But despite not having seen any of them play for Saints yet, getting rid of the old guard and bringing in fresh blood has got me out of the doldrums. The new boys will be up for this and Pompey won't cope. The argument about Baz or McCarthy will be irrelevant. By the time our boys are finished with them our goalkeepers could have been Melissa McCarthy, please log in to view this image or Baz White please log in to view this image and still win. 3-0 <: {{{{><{
This. He`s been criticised for both the goals he conceded against Watford - I doubt any keeper in the country would`ve saved either - one drilled really hard and low across him (I wish we`d do that more, rather than trying to pass it in), the other a worldy free kick.
