Why this trend to play wingers on their "wrong foot" side of the pitch unless it's expected they should cut inside to shoot on their preferred foot? The left footed Tanner is invariably played on the right wing and the likes of Willock and Zak on the left. It does come off on times but the trouble is it also starves Salech of that early ball. Bagan and especially Ryan Giles at left wingback got it right serving Keiffer Moore with early left footed crosses. Maybe that's just a current lack of left footed options out wide - up till now. Got a feeling this Kellyman lad could provide the service that Salech needs on the left side. A quick delivery with the "correct" foot that can make all the difference to Salech rather than a winger delaying and checking back to get on it. Sometimes that service never comes in anyway because the wide man invariably plays it backwards into midfield. With Tanner out and no other obvious candidate with the "correct foot" on the left, Kellyman could be the answer.
What brought it to the fore was I posted earlier about Josh Bowler going back to Blackpool. He was probably one of the most single footed player we've seen at the club. Hardly ever used his right foot always his left and guess what - he was invariably played on the right wing.
In fairness, in his first spell at Blackpool he scored some very good goals cutting in from the right. Of course, right footed Chris Burke was our best right wing in the last 15 years. Left footed Noonie did okay there but he learned to go outside on his right in his last couple of years with us and caused real problems for left backs programmed to follow him inside. Now if only he had also learned to cross with his right.
With our fullbacks underlapping, it compounds the lack of appropriately footed wingers. At least it they overlapped they could get a cross in. Salech does cut a frustrated figure.
He'd be a much happier man with a decent service from out wide - gets far too many straight balls in the air that he needs to control.
