So two weeks to go. Stupid ****ing international break making this build up longer than normal In the meantime let's have some memories of previous South Coast derbies. My first was the 2-0 win in the league cup in 2003 with a Beattie brace. An already fired up crowd was even more so by them ****s ruining the silence for Bates. Quite possibly my favourite ever home game. Only WBA is comparable atmosphere wise imo. Obviously my other big memory is the thornhill at Fratton. Just a magical evening from start to finish. Watching the skates stream for the exits at 3-0 was superb and then adding a 4th to make it a record away win was the cherry on top. Even though we didn't get the results we wanted the noise around St Mary's for Lambert's equaliser in 2010 and after Sharp's second in 2012 was incredible. The latter is the only time I've seen more than half of St Mary's stood for a sustained period of play. The 3-0 in 2003 was fun too with the Dodd corner and Pahars goal but lacked the intensity of others imo coming in the same month of the league cup game.
FA cup 2010. We were league one, they were premier league. Sadly, they trounced us, but my overriding memory of that game is the trouble afterwards at the Itchen/Northam barrier outside the ground. I sit in the Itchen North, so had to navigate through it all, but the real memory is walking past reception, and looking up at the hospitality suites and seeing a man stood at one of the windows, watching all the commotion. God bless him, it was Markus with his camera, making sure he got all the trouble captured.
Sharp's goal to make it 2-1 was possibly my favourite moment as a Saints fan. The less said about what followed the better, but for a few minutes after that goal the stadium was like nothing I'd seen before.
Easily the FA Cup game where Oakley scored a screamer and we got an injury time penalty for absolutely no reason at all. Good ****ing times
Me too. The elation of that goal and then the utter dejection when the hit and hope (I might be being hard on him there but…) equaliser went in sums up what it’s like to be a Saints fan.
Our last home win against them. And Redknapp was our manager Obviously we've only played them twice at home since then but that still needs to change.
No surprise that this one was first. My favourite part of that is hearing their fans chant 'scummers here we come' barely 10 seconds before we score. Don't think you are lads
My avatar. Best part of the photo is the saints fan in the disabled section of the Fratton end celebrating it.
My second ever Saints game was in September 75 versus our fishy chums - we won 4-0 , with a Channon hattrick. I wasn`t really a Saints fan yet, having just arrived in town - I don`t recall there being much animosity back in those days, but maybe I just didn`t pick up on it, being a newcomer.
When Pompey were in the top flight in the 80's for the season I was about 13 or so and I visited a friend in Portsmouth who was a Pompey fan. His family knew I was a Saints fan and bought me a ticket to go which I did not know until I got there but I would be in a stand on my own as they couldn't get me a ticket near them. Being so young I was unaware of the fierce rivalry at the time . I was in with the Pompey crowd but luckily I was sensible enough to have my coat done up over my Saints shirt and not celebrate when Saints scored. It was a 2-2 draw. I think Colin Clarke scored ( possibly both ) but I can't remember. Good game though.
Was that the same game that they went 0-1 up with their striker scoring a header and getting concussion by our GK knocking him out in the process?
