I agree. My point about a striker though was about the here and now. We all know BBD isn’t going to ever do that again, I would argue that Stewart hasn’t really proven himself at this level yet (most of his Sunderland goals were in league one).

Arma, for me, is an interesting one and it all depends on the situation with his back injury which, if it has a tendency to just seize up is a worry. My comment was more about looking at the team now and honestly being able to see a proven 20 goal striker among them. The good news is that, as we have both said, we have apparently not only added some extra support for the strikers we do have but also hopefully added goals from elsewhere to take the pressure away from the strikers.

Fair point well put. I guess along with the league 1 season he had the season before it's fair to say he can score goals at this level (but must admit I though he had scored 20 that season)

Like I said we can't be wedded to any of them (least of all BBD) but can't either sack them off on the basis that they can't perform really well at this level - they can.

If we get a good price and better players are available I get the feeling the club will do whatever it takes. Similarly if Stewart especially is just not the same player anymore. But to shop on the basis of players who have scored at this level when we have them just seems a little short sighted to me.

West Brom fans were gagging for him to be part of the Fellows deal. It really is just Saints fans who think he is ****

I guess they are looking at his numbers rather than his performances

I am staggered by the number of signings but know little about them and would hope that they are an improvement.

I felt we were not in the same class as Stoke laat week. The visitors deserved the win and i was of the opinion that Wrexham matched us in the first half. Not convinced the team Still inherited would be in contention for promotion. There are still alot of players i would move on and the strike force still looks blunt.

We can make a better judgement after the Pompey match. They are rebuilding too . I still think Portsmouth will do better than most expect but i also think Mousinho will be poached by a bigger club at some point.

The transfer window looks impressive on paper but lets see how they perform. Getting rid of the negative culture in the club is as important as the signings. I still think the play offs will be very tight and expect Leicester to be amonst the teams challenging Stoke , Boro, Brum , Coventry and Ipswich.

I would keep Armstrong and think Archer may come good. I would be inclined to get rid of both BBD and Stewart and maybe send Downs out on loan until Jan. Not convinced he is better than Mara tbh.

I’m glad you are not the manager <laugh>

People need to stop comparing Mara to Downs. They are nothing alike in terms of how they play.

If we’re going to 4-2-3-1 as assumed and Azaz and Fellows are starters then it’s either Archer down the middle with a winger Robinson/Fraser.

Or Stewart/Downs with Armstrong as a wide attacker, which would get the height and link up play.

I don’t see us going for a striker on loan after signing Downs

Having watched some highlights of Azaz at Boro, I didn’t see many headers in his game, maybe that’s the way Boro played, but if we’re going for crosses, then at six foot he would provide a bit of target.

I find the comparisons troubling for what I’d like to think is actually a fairly obvious reason

Looks like a very good focal point striker in a loan striker system. I’d expect the chief rivals would be the other relegated clubs?

It’s difficult with Stewart because there is a chance that he’ll never be the same player after the Achilles injury. It’s a nightmare place to get an injury. I have early stage tendonitis and it’s really tough to deal with and I don’t need to sprint and cut in angles as a job. And my injury is far less severe as well

I think that’s why the suggestion is contingent on one of Stewart, Archer or Armstrong leaving. Say, for example, PSV come in for Archer. They won’t be able to afford to buy him I don’t think so it would be a loan out. But if he wanted to go then a loan in would make sense to avoid us stockpiling when he comes back

But the point about not wanting to rely on loans in the championship and then feeling like you have to spend big just to stand still (upon promotion) applies to a striker more than any other position. Especially with no option as the parent club just want to develop him

    Eh?

Mara and Downs are of the same age when signed by Saints, with a similar footballing background, and costing a similar fee, and both with the one-for-the-future tag. Of course comparisons will be made. Plus Mara is fresh in the memory because he was the most recent young striker with potential that SR gambled on.

Is it a bit of a lazy comparison? Yes. Is it racist? Er, no.

If you’re implying that people only compare them because they have a similar skin tone, and similar hairstyle, then I think you’re just looking for the racism tbh.

People compare Dibling to Grealish basically because they both wear low socks and can dribble. I guess you could add they are white, and have similar hairstyle. So is that racist too?

Was expecting someone to make a late move. And at this stage they’d probably want a loan with an option especially as he didn’t convince in the Premier League. Not sure where that would leave us in terms of central defence. Especially as it sounded like Edwards had agreed terms with QPR implying we let him speak with them. That was just a rumour though
