I was amused by the story of the thick right wing idiot who attempted to paint an English flag on a roundabout, but the result was a Danish flag! The Vikings are returning? These are very disturbing times; we fought wars against fascism. The Nazis demonised the Jews through unfair and inaccurate propaganda to the point where ordinary, normally reasonable Germans reviled them - without knowing why, but simply referring to “The Jews” provoked immediate reactions of revulsion. There are examples here too - not least in East London in the late 19th/early 20th centuries when Jewish immigration was blamed through propaganda for the extreme poverty suffered by the indigenous population. It was an easy excuse for government for its own failures. Now we see similar behaviour here towards “Asylum Seekers” despite this being a very diverse group of people from many different places, the majority of whom have very legitimate reasons for seeking asylum. These people aren’t the problem; the government’s failure to implement a proper system for dealing with asylum claims is. Yet another casualty of the Tory cuts to all public services. If you don’t fund them, they won’t work. I can’t believe that so many are so willing to believe everything they read and hear and how easily manipulated they are. Or how weak our government is in doing nothing meaningful to address the issue. However sophisticated our world becomes through technological advancement, the nature of people doesn’t seem to change.
