Just pointless thread (Mods feel free to move) other than the obvious ones what songs remind you of a Sunderland game? A particular match? Stadium? For me. wonder wall by oasis, after the L1 final, they could have played any song, But hearing 46k SAFC singing a long was magical. me dad who hates them said that was alright
Please remember some of these songs are old classics that were reinvented in the 70's by drunken louts masquerading as decent Sunderland supporters Here's your first, this was a fabulous song by Johnny Cash and, despite it being a bit Country-Cheesy, had great lyrics and a sing-along chorus. The Sunderland fans corrupted it and it was sung up and down the country ... ... it's finest hour was when we had thousand upon thousands on the open terrace at Stoke for an FA Cup tie. Totally stupid and didn't make a pick of sense but people weren't so precious in those days. Yippee aye yay, yippie aye oh ... foreskins in the sky
Fairground Attraction, Perfect....1988. When we beat Northampton 3 - 1 to secure promotion to division 2 Tyne Tees done a segment on the win and promotion. John Mcphails penalty at the Roker end, Eric Gates diving header at the Fulwell...and the song they used was Perfect. Stuck in my head ever since, and every time I hear it it reminds me of that night.
Those wonderful days when thousands of daft people clarted about and didn't take themselves so bloody seriously
Wycombe playoffs final game - Baker street, Gerry Raffertey. Ended up in Baker Street as a last stop before heading to Wembley...me Dad commented..."canny pubs here and a class song too". I said.."Eh? Wetherspoons is a song?"...."Nor man...Baker Street". I told him I didn't know it...he said "you do, everyone does...stick it on your headphones when we get on the train". He was right!
Sorry if this derails, but.. We nursed my Dad through significant (he now has an internal dedib) health issues while we were in L1 but I remember being sat in tears for my one to one saying my boy wants to take my Dad to Wembley, just prior to the Shef Wed home leg. Richard Ashcroft - C'mon People (We're making it now) was my song of choice at the time driving relentlessly from North Shields to Beamish watching my hero go from strength to strength. If you hear Liam Gallagher sing it on Radio 2 it's even better. I didn't tell the boy Granda was well enough for the first leg and the scenes when they saw each other is for another thread. I still get a lump in my throat when he shouted Granda is here.... But then at the L1 playoff final to hear Oasis and singing along will forever be special. There have been some issues on the board over the last few days - remember why we are all here.... The old man and the young one have got some memories. Come on.
Brilliant mate, that's quite a memory to carry with you. I was just thinking about my mate Alan Crago today, Mr RAWhite from the thread. I met him off the train in Newcastle on the way to the di Canio 3-0 as I'd found a ticket for him. We had a pint in the Bulls Head and they had the Proclaimers on ... ... we walked up to SJP singing it together while passing Mags glared at us. I would swap every penny I have to go to another game with Al, a wonderful friend and a great supporter.
I hear you mate, memories are priceless and for info.... My Dad is there every week teaching my now 15 year old how to follow the lads. Even the bits where I'm telling them both off as walk past the away coaches..... Memories. All that matters.
I take my grandson to matches and have great memories of the 2 of us. We didn't sit together at Wembley cos his dad wanted to go so I got him a ticket and let them sit together but when he saw me after the game he ran and jumped into my arms and we hugged as if we hadn't seen each other for ages. That memory will live with me for life
Great post, all joking aside, music is one of the few things that can attach an emotion or feelings to something, someone or somewhere and take you to it immediately. There are some songs I love for various reasons and others I hate passionately. The song "These Dreams" by Heart was an ex girlfriend of mines favourite song and I still think about her when I hear it and feel positive. Tom Waites "Downtown Train" always makes me feel good as it reminds me of Saturday nights out when I was in my 20s and early 30s. But I despise the Annie Lennox song "No More I Love Yous" because of losing people close to me when that was in the charts. If it comes on the radio now, I change channels. In relation to SAFC, I don't think there's any particular song that I associate with us beyond the obvious, "Wise Men Say", "Paint Your Wagon" and "Ready To Go". But each is special in its own way. "Ready To Go" is probably more associated with us than anything else and likely how aot of people have heard of it. "Paint Your Wagon" raises a smile, especially after a good result. But I'd say most that I still get shivers when I think about and hear us singing "Wse Men Say" at Wembley after the play off wins. I'm privileged to have been there twice and been part of us singing it after we won. The fact that FIFA even had a video of us singing it on their official twitter page after we beat Wycombe and acknowledged us shows just how special moments like that are. Edit, I should have put Wise Men Say or I'd doesn't make much sense.
I hope this is received as I intend it to be but that is incredible. As the Dad I witnessed it, haven't heard my Dad (Granda) talk about it. I've heard 'Grandson' talk about it forever though. Incredible memory. And as 'Dad'.... Wow,
