In the other war, Ukraine have been targetting Russia's energy production with drones and have taken a fair few refineries off-line, to the point they're starting to have fuel and gas shortages.

So the UK is going to revive sanctions on Iran - I didn't even know they were ever lifted!

That’ll show ‘em. Carpet manufacturers of Tehran are in tears.

The UK imports a mix of goods and services from Iran, with recent data showing imports in 2024 included coffee, tea, spices, carpets, and nuts, though the total value is much smaller than Iran's trade with other countries. While most of the UK's imports from Iran are services, goods such as nuts, and food and vegetable preparations are key imports

I assume the sanctions would be around technology and hardware (arms, missiles), also financial as in large transfer of funds ie money laundering. Asset freezing. Also restricted travel.

Not so much provisions such as food, drink, agriculture and pharmacy. Although closely monitored to ensure there isn't any attempt to get round the above.

No it’s mostly carpets. We’re pulling the rug out from beneath them.

Carpet bombing or carpets with bodies in <laugh>

    Anyway...

    Details of the New Sanctions
    • Re-imposition of Nuclear Sanctions:
The UK has started a process to re-impose nuclear sanctions on Iran, a process that was previously lifted by the UN Security Council.
    • Triggered by Non-Compliance:
The decision to re-impose sanctions was due to Iran's significant failure to comply with the 2015 nuclear deal and its continued stockpiling of highly enriched uranium.
    • Goal of the Sanctions:
The sanctions aim to create a diplomatic window to re-engage in dialogue with Iran, urging its government to comply with international human rights laws and deter hostile activities.
    • Specific Measures:
The sanctions include financial measures like asset freezes and a ban on arms deals with Iran. They also prohibit the development of Iran's ballistic missile program.
    • Coordination:
The move is being coordinated with France and Germany, who also initiated the snapback process.
    Context and Urgency

    • Expiration of Authority:
The UK's ability to trigger this mechanism expires in October 2025, making the current action necessary.
    • Diplomatic Pressure:
The E3 (the UK, France, and Germany) are using these sanctions as a tool to spur negotiations with Iran, rather than an indication of the end of diplomacy.
