IT has been a summer of upheaval at Sunderland, with a playing squad unrecognisable from this time last year after promotion sped up the recruitment project. One of those new players, French defender Nordi Mukiele, made his debut at the Stadium of Light in a penalty shootout defeat to League One Huddersfield alongside two other full debutants.

Comfortable on the right side of defence as well as through the middle, Mukiele said his choice to come to Sunderland was informed by an "exciting" change and spoke of his reaction to the Stadium of Light atmosphere and that Netflix documentary.

"It all seemed to happen very quickly," the 27-year-old said about his move from French champions PSG to Wearside. "This challenge is very exciting and I also want to bring my experience I had before in my other team. I think it's something really exciting and also for the fans and the story of this club."

Mukiele was Sunderland's 11th signing of the season, joining up from a top-of-the-table title fighter to a club looking to stay in the division, so why the move? For Sunderland's new number 20, the answer was simple. It represented an exciting change.

"I think I just wanted to see something else," he explained. "I was in some team where we were fighting to win the title or to play in the Champions League. Here, it's something different.

"The story, all of these things around the club, it's really exciting. It's not like you come to one club who just came up in the Premier League. No, it's something more deep inside and that's why I decided to come here. Like I said, I will fight for this club. Since the first day I came here, until the end, I will fight for them"

And the story of the club is something Mukiele is all too aware of, admitting he had watched 'Sunderland 'Til I Die' on Netflix.

"Yes, of course I watched it. Not all, but I watched it a bit. That's why I was saying that I would do everything to put this club where they deserve to be. After what happened here, they don't deserve it. Now I'm really happy that we are back in the Premier League. We just have to stay here for the next year, but we will start for this year."

As for the Black Cats' fourth cup exit in their first game in as many years, Mukiele wants to put it behind him.

"We conceded only one chance and they scored and after, in the second half, we did really good. The second half and the first half were in the same game and I think we deserved to win this game.

"We deserved to score more than one goal but football is like this and the only thing we can say is congrats to Huddersfield because they did what they had to do and now they go to the next round."

Neither do I. They’re all saying the right things which is always palatable to the supporters. And this time around I honestly believe it’s different from every other time. It’s just that every time I read these things my mind goes back to this quote

I am very proud and happy to sign for Sunderland.…..Maybe the Sunderland fans don't know me yet, but I promise that they will quickly discover that I will give everything for them and the club.

I’ll let you find out who said it!!
