Competition - Carabao Cup, EFL Trophy, 2nd Round
    Venue - Swansea.com Stadium
    Date - 26 August 2025
    Kick off - 7:45pm

Following their hard fought 1-1 draw at home to Watford, next up for Alan Sheehan’s Swansea squad is a Carabao Cup match at home to League One Plymouth.

Last Saturday, Zan Vipotnik's late header saw the Swans fight back to draw with Watford after teenager Nestory Irankunda's sparkling free-kick had looked set to end the Hornets' long wait for an away win.

Substitute Vipotnik glanced home with almost his first touch as Alan Sheehan's side salvaged a point.

Irankunda's first-half goal was his first since he joined Watford from Bayern Munich in the summer – and it may be a while before he scores a better one.

Having been fouled by Josh Key, the 19-year-old Australia international picked himself up and whipped the set-piece over the Swansea wall and high into the corner of the net.

Watford had been knocking at the door, with Luca Kjerrumgaard denied when his far-post header was pushed on to the bar by Swans goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux and then again when Ben Cabango acrobatically hooked off the line.

Kjerrumgaard's drive forced another save from Vigouroux early in the second half before the Swans finally began to offer an attacking threat around the hour mark.

After Liam Cullen turned Josh Tymon's low cross on to the near post, Watford were on course to hang on a first away win since February.

But Slovenia forward Vipotnik, who has been linked with a move away from the Swans in this transfer window, met Ethan Galbraith's cross with a header which bounced into the net via the far post.

From that point it was the Swans who looked the more likely winners, with Goncalo Franco denied by Egil Selvik in added time and Vipotnik coming agonisingly close to tapping in the rebound.

Whilst the Swans were drawing with the Hornets, Plymouth were securing their first League One win under new boss Tom Cleverley with a 1-0 home victory over Steve Bruce's Blackpool.

Argyle midfielder Malachi Boateng was the match winner, cutting in from left and hammering home from inside the box after being set up by Ayman Benarous in the 48th minute.

Plymouth – who lost their opening four league games – started well with Alex Mitchell's far-post header cleared off the line by fellow central defender Oliver Casey in the second minute.

The Swans have played the Pilgrims on 88 previous occasions, winning 37, losing 33 with 18 draws.

The teams last met at the Swansea.com Stadium last season in a Championship fixture when the Swans ran out comfortable 3-0 winners:

Turning to tomorrow, the Swans should win: I’m going for a 3-1 home win. <cheers>

Elliot Bell will be the man in the middle for the Swans’ Carabao Cup clash with Plymouth Argyle tomorrow night (7.45pm).

The game marks Bell’s first second Swans fixture, having had the whistle for the home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last season, which also happened to be his first Championship match as a referee.

Earlier this year Bell also took charge of a handful of fixtures in Japan as part of an exchange between the respective football associations.

The Merseyside official has taken charge of four games in all competitions this season, handing out 15 yellow cards and one red card.

He will be assisted by Harley Mckittrick and Ross Murphy, Matthew Russell will be the fourth official.

Thanks Taff. As always with these games a lot depends on the line up. I would think he will put out a fairly strong team but give starts to a few of the guys who have been on the bench. Hopefully we can keep a clean sheet so it's a 2-0 win for me with Bobby Wales getting on the score sheet.

A great write up, looking forward to this game as I lived in Plymouth for a while and love the banter with a few friends. I’m rubbish at predicting the correct score so I’ll just go for a Swans win ;)

I just hope we don't throw this game. It would be nice to have a run in the cup and a home time is all you can ask for.

Like Glam says, start the bench from Saturday. Looks like we have the strongest squad we've had for a while, so we should win this one.

I think that would be good idea, we need as many players as possible getting in on games. That way the ones on the bench will be match fit for when they get called on
