The Nunthorpe provides an opportunity for a wager I reckon. Lady Iman gets the age allowance but not many 2 year olds run and even fewer have won the race.

You can make a case for a few in an open looking affair but I feel Arizona Blaze looks to tick the most boxes. He was quite busy last season but held his form into the Breeders Cup with an excellent second there. His latest race was arguably a personal best and 5F may well be his trip. He seems consistent and at 9/2 I think he will be popular and should be shorter when the stalls open.

    Nunthorpe Arizona Blaze 9/2

The Friday card at York took very little time to assess.

The Lonsdale Stakes (2.25) ought to go to the Gold Cup winner Trawlerman, top of the ratings even with an adjustment for his penalty and his short odds reflect that.

The Gimcrack (3.00) looks one of the most substandard in years and would not look out of place on a French card. The favourite Do Or Do Not has been fitted with cheekpieces to try and lose his maiden tag but I would not be surprised to see him only placed again even though Ed Walker’s having been going great this week.

With no obvious champion sprinter candidate in the Classic generation or the older horses, it is quite possible that the Nunthorpe (3.35) will go to the Irish two year old Lady Iman.

So that leads me to look elsewhere, specifically the rather unappealing Friday lunchtime/early afternoon card at HQ. The main race appears to be the Listed Hopeful Stakes (1.20) with just nine remaining so I am hopeful of finding the winner. David O’Meara’s Toyotomi has been running consistently over five and six furlongs in weak French races after winning a Listed race at Deauville in April but never featured in a Chester Listed race last time. Ferrous won three races on the kitty litter and was third in the Chipchase but ran abysmally on the turf last time so is hard to fancy. Pellitory has a visor fitted, has not troubled the judge since his seasonal bow over seven furlongs and has only ever run over six furlongs once, on his debut. Shagraan has not raced over six furlongs for more than a year and his career best was third in a Group 3 over five furlongs on his penultimate start. Seven year old Apollo One won a Group 3 last term but has not troubled the judge in four starts in 2025 and may struggle again. William Haggas runs Elmonjed, who won the Sky Bet Dash at York but was an also-ran in the Stewards’ Cup (Apollo One ahead in tenth). He would have chances here if that Goodwood run is ignored. Iberian was a useful two year old but failed to progress at three (last in the Guineas) and drops in class here having disappointed in three pattern races since finishing second in the Listed Cammidge Trophy. The favourite today will be Lethal Levi, last year’s Ayr Gold Cup winner. Upped in class this term, he has placed at Group 3 and Group 2 level before finishing fourth in a seven furlong Group 3 last time. With his sights lowered and back to six furlongs he should be involved in the finish. However, I am going to go with Saeed bin Suroor’s filly DUBAI TREASURE, lightly raced and stepping up from winning a Goodwood handicap at this trip off topweight. She looks to be going the right direction now and on her career debut seven races ago she was beaten by the useful Sacred Angel.

And predictably Arizona Blaze runs the worst race of his life. You couldn't make it up. He was about 5 lengths ahead of today's runner up when they met in the Commonwealth Cup, today he was about 5 lengths behind the same horse who had been receding down the ratings to 99. Different trip today but a 100/1 shot rated 99 second in a Nunthorpe?
Watching the replay there it looked like the were racing in the Kalahari with the desert kicking up from the hooves. Ah well, raise Ain't Nobody a stone and make huge excuses for Arizona Blaze and Lady Iman then you will only need a salt mine to think it went to form. I reckon I have stopped more horses than foot and mouth this season. Never mind Barry's Bismarck, Grendel's Skidmark. Couldn't win a coin toss with a double headed penny. <laugh>
