In my ideal world, I would sell Patrick Roberts (sorry to those who really like him), and replace him in the squad with somebody like Daghim. But then also bring in a new starting left footed right winger like Bakwa. We then have Daghim playing across the entire front 3 as a development option and to be here during AFCON, with the potential to develop into an absolute monster forward. Roberts is about to become third or fourth choice right winger and it doesn't make sense having him here purely to make up the homegrown numbers. And we have enough experience and leadership in the squad now. Its also not fair on him at this stage of his career to not be playing.
Just watched the clips, he's got the pace and physicality for sure and will be an interesting option as an impact sub for Talbi/Adingra in the early stages of the season. I'm sure RLB will want to work a lot with him on tactical awareness and decision making before he throws him in regularly.
Not for me to say but I'd think that deserves a thread of it's own and a sticky ... ... says everything about the club and supporters that makes me want to see every game.
Yeh I didn't mean to replace them necessarily. More that you need more than two "starting" wingers. Ideally I'd like two wingers on each side who are capable of starting and then one who can cover all 3 forward positions as a development option. So left wing - Adingra and Mundle. Right wing - Talbi + one other (Bakwa). And then Deghim to cover all of them and develop into a monster. Roberts can then be sold so he can go and get the first team football he needs at this stage of his career.
Keeping an eye on homegrown quotas is important but not as the expense of squad quality. And its not fair on the players to hold onto them just to fill a quota if they'll never play. This season we are absolutely fine. It can be next summer's problem if we need to move more on.
Knows his stuff Pete, but £30 million + for a championship winger who hasn’t proved himself in the premier league is a massive risk.
I get your point, I just don't think a £15m winger (Daghim) as 5th choice is a wise way to spend. I'll be happy with 1 more winger on the right and Roberts to be the 5th.
Yeh I mean we should only do it if we have the bandwidth of course. I'd not be seeing it as £15m for a 5th choice winger. It's £15m for a player we think may become a £70m striker. An investment.
Really like Daghim. Unique physical traits for a winger, comfortable with both feet, has really good positional awareness to get himself between the posts when the ball is with the opposite winger. Decent aerial threat as well. Needs time though, his creativity is inconsistent and would like to see him fill out a bit. Would be a good understudy to Talbi while also being able to fill in up front if needed.
I think we only really need an impact sub for the first half of the season. He will be playing Talbi and Adingra out wide week-in week-out assuming they stay injury free. We get Mundle back mid-autumn too. Our squad remains massive so adding a winger who would demand starter minutes doesn't necessarily work brilliantly for us right now. Of course I'd be happy to see a star land, but it does come with problems. On the homegrown thing, we are still storing up a bit of trouble for the medium term. To ease that, we need to aim for 6 outfield players who will be long-term, solid squad contributors. I think we only have 3 I'm confident about right now. We definitely need to change that. However, when I look at what is available in Daghim's position right now, there isn't much. Most of the HG players of similar profile are too expensive, have just moved or already at elite clubs. We'll need to look to other profiles in our squad to get to the magic number. A problem for sure, but probably a problem for tomorrow.
Totally fair, if that's what we think. I've not seen him projected as a striker or a £70m player anywhere, but I'd never heard of him until this week.
I expected us to sign a winger and CB and said I imagine we’d make another signing or two more model based I’d say daghim is model based with us still wanting an immediate impact forward imo
Not sure Daghim is the type of player we should be looking at, IMO and i'm sure RLB has mentioned, we should be getting a winger with a bit more pedigree, similar to Lauriente, Fatawu and Rowe.
I understand what you're saying but this would very much be a signing we can only make as a premier league club. It's the kind of calculated gamble / punt that Brighton or Bournemouth would make. It's the kind of deal I was expecting to see us do. Using our premier league status and finances to continue "the model" but on a bigger scale. It's why I'd only do it if we had headroom to allow a "starting" winger in as well, personally.
