Defining Moral Panic Moral panics occur when a perceived social problem sparks public concern and anxiety that leads to drastic measures being taken to “solve” these problems . Often much of the information that triggers a moral panic is exaggerated and provided without sufficient context, or in worst cases, completely false. When a moral panic first begins, it is often fuelled by a group with a shared interest in generating fear of a social problem, so that they can gain the loyalty of society. People who feed into moral panics use methods to receive the trust of others by claiming that the social problem could interfere with their lives or the functionality of society.
