Why should they, I get fed up reading all the pro racist views and then attempts to justify homophobia on here. You would've thought in this day and age they'd find another website to pedal this stuff.

You sir should never hide away from your perfectly acceptable and understable comments, bourne from dare I say, your own life expiriences. You are a well read and intelligent individual and one of the few that can see the trees within the woods. I only comment on issues that affect the treatment fans of this club and not the club itself, because it so often does not reflect the fans that I know and have stood beside for the last 30 years. This new lot baffle me!

I have stood and sat at Charlton since the early 70's. I didn't like the racism then when it was in the grounds and I don't like it now when it is just outside. The new lot baffle me too.

I had a racist joke behind me last season think it was and told the fan off and said I don't like racist comments who then moved. Several seasons ago, one of our black footballers who has now left was getting so much racist abuse from this one male, it made me and the other fans in my row uncomfortable and insulted. Fortunately we all complained to the club and action was taken, they will do something if you let them know and nowadays I'd rather challenge it then let it go. There are some people I would be reluctant to bring to Charlton exactly because of what you hear from this 'new' lot. I have heard it outside as well but more difficult to deal with, they're usually always in groups too - cowards.

Thank you for the kind sentiments, typical. They are appreciated.

WWOCB made the point earlier that he is interested in knowing the views of fellow Charlton supporters, rather than some unknown fan of another club. I have made the exact same point before regarding threads of a delicate nature (gypsies, the London Riots, racism) but am repreatedly told that I should post on the General Chat section. Why should I do so? Why are so many afraid to grapple with the challenging subjects of the day? It is not always racial and political agitation that drives these threads - it is the genuine enjoyment of a well-honed and fairly-balanced debate.
Sadly, it is the reticent hand-wringers who curtail such debate and prefer to defer on all but the most twee of subject matter.

    Yours truly,

PondersEndAddick - I thought that the comments on this thread have been well thought out and honest. I hope that the dabate can continue without recourse to abusing each other (not that I think you would).

Yes I totally agree, unfortunately one poster does resort to name calling of fans with different views from his own.

Thank you, Ralph. You are among a small group who do not find me insulting - for now, anyway. SuperC will put you straight should you wish to ask him.

Oh, and RyanR as well. According to him, I am the most obnoxious and vile person he has ever encountered.

What a cloistered life that young chap must lead, eh?

Who could that be, Pat? Out the fiend and we shall stigmatise him to within an inch of his miserable life.

I don't think that's appropriate PEA and hopefully he will know but it should be possible to disagree without resorting to personal insults and abuse as that just ruins the debate.

We don't mind these debates- its when it becomes insulting to members. Same for JA's threads, don't like it then don't read it. I have nothing to say on the matter, hence my non reply <ok>

It's often offputting when they're all over the board, threads about rumours and others when they are supposed to be on the same articles. You can avoid reading the posts but you can't avoid seeing the threads. No one else seems to do it.

Cheers for all the great responses guys! I'm glad the posters who don't really enjoy this sort of debate have refrained from reading/commenting rather than posting and complaining, however if the thread gets out of hand I will take it down <ok>

    Someone mentioned earlier that homophobia and racism are forms of verbal abuse and should not be tolerated. I completely agree, however I also would say that the following examples are equally abusive;

-you fat bastard! (To John Parking et al.) Afterall, obesity affects a minority and through singing such songs, you are targetting a minority who may be offended by such terms.

-he looks like a girl! Oh Robbie Savage, he looks like a girl! - afterall, transvestites and effeminate men are also a minority in society

-any comment on the ugliness of Gary Doherty/Luke Chadwick etc

    -Strawberry Blonde...you're having a laugh!

I'm sure you can all think of plenty more.

Though I use the above examples almost tongue-in-cheek, I believe it is a valid point. What's so different about singing chants about the colour of somebodys skin rather than their hair? They are all forms of abuse, abuse to not only the individual, but anybody sharing a similar personality/appearance trait, and as such should (if racism and homophobia are being stamped out), be stamped out themselves.

PS, please don't misinterpret me as being an ultra-liberal, I am attempting to provoke a debate and thought amonst readers, rather than put across my own view.

You make a fair point about different types of discrimination and vile taunts.

Ginger jokes and songs must bring back awful memories and feelings within someone who suffered at school and beyond. It is not on, but will continue until the dawns of time, and I do not see how it can be eradicated completely. The same goes with those who are overweight, have a skin condition or any other difference that marks them out for unfair and highly insulting abuse.

I am fairly rotund, but am lucky that I look a bit like Halfdan Ragnarsson and will more than stand up for myself when agitated.

These sorts of comments are a form of bullying from school the persist into adulthood then in work situations. It doesn't make them in anyway acceptable but I agree that the best way is to answer back and stick up for yourself.

CharltonPat, do you think the best way to tackle racism would be to stand up for yourself?

It could be one way to challenge it or any personal abuse but not the only way.
