Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of defender Omar Alderete, subject to international clearance. Arriving from Getafe CF for an undisclosed fee, the Paraguay international has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light. Alderete made 99 appearances for Azulones during a four-year spell at Estadio Coliseum, including 36 last season. The 28-year-old started his career in South America before moving to Europe in 2019 and representing FC Basel, Hertha BSC, and Valencia CF. After moving to Wearside, Alderete said: “I’m feeling great about signing for this great team, so I’m really happy. I’m looking forward to my first experience in the Premier League – it’s a great challenge for me. I know it’s a historic Club, and when they told me there was an opportunity, I was excited about coming here. It’s always important to have the support of the people, and I’m going to give it my all on the pitch.” Alderete progressed through the ranks of Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño and spent time on loan Gimnasia before moving to Argentina and joining Club Atlético Huracán in 2019. A move to Basel followed one year later, and the defender impressed throughout a single season in the Swiss Super League, which culminated in him being named in the Swiss Team of the Year. Alderete’s time at Hertha included loan spells with Valencia and Getafe, who he joined permanently in 2023. Kristjaan Speakman added: “We are delighted to welcome Omar to Sunderland. He’s a player with extensive experience in European Club football and at the international level. It was important for us to identify and add a left-sided centre back for the group, and ensure the profile was aligned to our game model. In Omar, we have an aggressive and athletic player who can move the ball efficiently in possession. He’s connected to our story and where we want to go, and naturally excited about the opportunity to play in the Premier League.” The defender will wear the number 15 shirt. What a cracking signing gerrin chuffed with this one , now who's the other forward going to be Openda ?
Cult hero status incoming. For me anyway. He is everything we love about players when we are in the ground. Him and Reinaldo will be massive for us, if we are to survive. You just cant beat their nous. Anyone watch the way Vallecano played recently. That is the level these two are used to week in week out. These lads thrive on defending 1v1 and the goalmouth. If they can develop a partnership with Ballard and out to Hume we look sound for me. Then if Roefs can build that back 5 relationship we may well be onto a good thing.
I love Luke O’Nien!! He may be one of the worst defenders Sunderland have ever had, (the way some go on n here) but I love him….
Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Trey Ogunsuyi has signed a new long-term contract. The young striker has committed his future to the Club until 2028. Joining Sunderland at the age of 10, the 18-year-old has worked his way up the youth ranks, making his debut for the under-18 side during the 2022-23 season, and scored 15 goals in 20 games across the under-18 and under-21 teams last season. The Belgian youth international - who has been involved in the first-team’s early pre-season preparations - was handed his handed his competitive debut by first-team Head Coach Régis Le Bris against Stoke City in the Emirates FA Cup in January this year. On signing his new deal, Ogunsuyi said:“I’m buzzing to have signed a new contract. I’ve been at this Club since I was 10 years old so to continue my journey here is amazing. It’s always what you dream of as a Sunderland fan so when I got to play for the first-team, it was surreal, so I’m very grateful.” Academy Manager Robin Nicholls added: “We are delighted to agree a new contract with Trey, continuing his time with the club for a further significant period. Kristjaan, Flo and I prioritise the future of this club and ensuring our most talented academy players are rewarded for their progress is an essential part of this. To this end, Trey joins several of our other young players who have signed their contracts over the past few months. Trey is an exciting player who has been handed his senior competitive debut by Régis already, spent this pre-season training and playing with the First Team, and is regularly selected for the Belgium youth national teams. We are excited to continue executing the plan for his development and help him towards fulfilling the potential that he is showing.”
Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce that Trai Hume has signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light. Ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League season, the Northern Ireland international has committed his future to Wearside until 2030. Hume moved to the North East in 2022 and was immediately part of the squad that earned promotion to the EFL Championship, which is where he made his mark. The 23-year-old has made 123 appearances in the competition across three seasons, which culminated in an iconic day at Wembley Stadium in May, as Sunderland returned to the top tier following an eight-year absence. After committing his future to the Club, Hume said: “The Club has shown faith in me with this new contract in the Premier League, which is where I want to be. I arrived at Sunderland in League One and I just wanted to play football – I wasn’t thinking about promotions or the Premier League, but this is a massive Club and that means there is always going to be opportunities. It’s been a quick rise through the divisions, and I’ve loved every second of it, so I’m happy to extend my stay and keep making memories.” The defender started his career with Ballymena United before progressing through the ranks at Linfield and making his senior debut in April 2019. Following a loan return to Ballymena, Hume established himself within Linfield’s starting XI, which led to a move to Sunderland in January 2022. He made three senior appearances as the Black Cats secured a return to the second tier and later became an integral part of the Club’s promotion to the Premier League. International recognition deservedly followed, and the Northern Ireland international has earned 19 caps to date, whilst also captaining his country last season. Kristjaan Speakman said: “Trai’s story at Sunderland not only demonstrates the opportunities at our Club, but also what can happen when you take them. He arrived with the ambition of establishing himself in our team, and he is now a Premier League player, which is a testament to his application and dedication. He played an integral role throughout our time in the Championship, including our promotion last season, and his passion for Sunderland is clear every time he steps on the field. We are delighted he has committed his future to the Club and are excited to see him take this next step with us.” TRAI HUME SIGNS LONG-TERM CONTRACT - Sunderland AFC
