I’m not turning my nose up at a striker who reached double figures in the PL last season!

Yeah, if he'd done that five or six times over the course of his career I'd think him a decent prospect of perhaps doing it again in a lower quality side which we of course are.

But he's hit double figures in the premier league as many times as Amr Zaki despite 12 or 13 more campaigns.

Completely understand the value of his experience and I'm in no way complaining. Simply stating that this signing doesn't excite me so much as others have.

I agree I dont view it as exciting as the other names but as alluded to the RR podcast we seem to want to have at least one experienced player in each area of the pitch so can see the logic

Also Welbeck has always been criticized in terms of output but I think thats just modern football now all about stats, Bergkamp for example stats werent great but brought a lot - I think Danny offers a lot both on and off the pitch

Probably doesnt even sign but hey ho

I'd see Welbeck like the flipper on a pinball machine in Sunderland's set up tbh.

He'd stick like glue to the centre spot when we're defending ...

... ping from midfield when we win the ball then have runners coming off him.

Then support the wide players if they can get shots away or get into the penalty area if they need to release the ball.

It's no good us winning the ball, on the edge of our area, if the No 9 lets it bounce straight back to the opposition.

    IMO.

How is not getting excited about a 34 year striker who has struggled to score one in four across their career getting ahead of myself?

    ****ing weird.

Sunderland AFC is delighted to announce the signing of defender Omar Alderete, subject to international clearance.

Arriving from Getafe CF for an undisclosed fee, the Paraguay international has signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light.

Alderete made 99 appearances for Azulones during a four-year spell at Estadio Coliseum, including 36 last season.

The 28-year-old started his career in South America before moving to Europe in 2019 and representing FC Basel, Hertha BSC, and Valencia CF.

After moving to Wearside, Alderete said: “I’m feeling great about signing for this great team, so I’m really happy. I’m looking forward to my first experience in the Premier League – it’s a great challenge for me. I know it’s a historic Club, and when they told me there was an opportunity, I was excited about coming here. It’s always important to have the support of the people, and I’m going to give it my all on the pitch.”

Alderete progressed through the ranks of Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño and spent time on loan Gimnasia before moving to Argentina and joining Club Atlético Huracán in 2019.

A move to Basel followed one year later, and the defender impressed throughout a single season in the Swiss Super League, which culminated in him being named in the Swiss Team of the Year.

Alderete’s time at Hertha included loan spells with Valencia and Getafe, who he joined permanently in 2023.

Kristjaan Speakman added: “We are delighted to welcome Omar to Sunderland. He’s a player with extensive experience in European Club football and at the international level. It was important for us to identify and add a left-sided centre back for the group, and ensure the profile was aligned to our game model. In Omar, we have an aggressive and athletic player who can move the ball efficiently in possession. He’s connected to our story and where we want to go, and naturally excited about the opportunity to play in the Premier League.”

The defender will wear the number 15 shirt.

I've honestly no idea why a striker, with the chance of playing in Europe, would decide to go to the far NE coast of England ...

... whatever nonsense we're feeding these lads must be powerful stuff.

Do you think Ghisolfi is actually 'the French Derren Brown' and the likes of Xhaka will suddenly wake up wondering why the crowd is laughing <laugh>

'Alderete will wear the famous Sunderland number 15 shirt' ...

... I just hope he appreciates the significance of that to Sunderland supporters.

'Why, it's bloody iconic that man!'
