DANNY SIMPSON has turned down the offer of a new improved contract from Newcastle United.

However, the Chronicle understands that the Mancunian full-back has also been told he will not be allowed to leave the Magpies this January.

And this will disappoint both Queens Park Rangers and Aston Villa who are both keen on the former Manchester United defender.

Simpson still has two years left to run on his contract but talks on a new deal have now been postponed until the summer.

Simpson now finds himself in a similar position to Joey Barton almost 12 months ago.

Back then Barton turned down the chance of a fresh and improved offer and once talks reached breaking point the Scouser was transfer-listed at the end of the season – long before he eventually left United after running into off-the-field problems.

Simpson – now 24 – has not allowed uncertainty or personal issues like his prematurely-born child Skye affect his performances this season and helped the Magpies to an unbeaten start in the first 11 games to underline his value to the black-and-whites.

And while he was part of the side that lost 4-2 at Norwich City, it was very much a case of the one-time Sunderland loan player taking one for the team as he volunteered to step into the breach at centre-back in place of the injured Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini.

Simpson initially signed for the Magpies on loan from Man U before making a permanent switch to Tyneside in early 2010.

His reluctance to sign a new contract is thought to be down to personal terms and not the length of the deal.

No biggy, the far superior Santon slots in a right back and we get a new left back in January or the summer along with Ridgewell as a utility man.

I think he has been quite good in the right back position before the Norwich game where he obviously played Cb. I will be quite disappointed if he leaves but if we can move Santon to the right and maybe get Tawio or Peiters in left back, I will be happy :)

and I can understand why he won't be allowed to leave in January

Oh well. I won't be too sad to see him leave as we have world class cover!

He is not a good defender, whether its at RB or CB, if he doesn't want to sign a new contract its not the end of the world and we can do a lot better, hell I bet even Tavernier knows not to back off your man all the way from the halfway line to the six yard box.

Quite good was good enough for us last season and in the Championship. We have progressed since then and should be expecting better. Simpson is deluded if he thinks he will get into any other Premier League sides. It also says QPR and Villa are after him. This is bullshit, Luke Young has been one of the most consistent RB's in the league this season and McLeish just spunked a lot of money on Hutton who he rates very very highly and wouldn't drop.

If this is the case he can **** off. He's lucky to be in our ****ing team and he's only going to ****ing QPR or Villa who won't acheive anything either.

I'm sure there'll be loads of clubs waiting to sign him up and pay him more than we are.

Keep up with the times Danny, the cash isn't there any more.

If Danny Simpson ever earns more than he getting here (12k-15k pw) there is something wrong with the world.

He isn't good enough to be playing silly buggers with his contract. Keep him till the summer then let him go. It seems that the club are priming tavernier for a first team role with the amount of loan moves he has had. Think we will see him and santon fighting over RB next season.

He's most probably leaving for the same reasons as when Barton and Nolan left.

Got offered a new contract that is about worth half than his current one.

Good luck to him in the future , he's done well for us , although he better continue to perform this season.

Big shame for me. Prior to the Norwich, he had been easily one of our top performers for the previous 5 games or so. We need him for competition with Santon. I won't criticise him or the club as its foolish to do so without knowing what the problem is i.e. figures. At some stage we need to build something and you need squad players like Simpson who are fully committed and can do a good job. He's no world beater and Santon will always be the better player, but you'd struggle to find a lad with more committment and a better attitude. A proper team player who is having his best season so far. Still improving too. Defensively he is pretty good bar him backing off in the early games this season, but some of his blocks and clearances have won us points, just like Saylor, Raylor and Krul. Attacking wise and distribution wise he can improve and is doing so.

I don't like the constant turnover of players, and despite having Graham Carr, I guarantee it will catch up with you in the end. Football hasn't changed in that regard.

Nobody knows the exact circumstances behind this apart from Danny's camp and the club so I can't comment on that.

All I'm going to say is thanks for the service, been a solid player for us and an important part of a very solid back line at the start of this season. Wish him all the best for the future.

Agree with this absolutely 100 per cent. I have my concerns that we're never going to be able to build a squad with at least a solid backbone because they're going to be out the door in five minutes. Sadly the time of legends at our club went with Alan Shearer.

    Complete non story.

He has two years left on his contract, he's not beign sold in January and there will be more talks in the summer.

In other words, nothing is happening one way or the other

His problem is that he thinks he is better than what he actually is. The fact that he made his own football game says it all <doh>
