WS saying he hopes to have Flynn Downes back in training this week and available to play Wrexham but Taylor Harwood-Bellis is about 10 days from being available for selection, says he rejoined group training in the second part of last week
Help me out here, but if memory serves, I think the only time we played Wrexham home and away in competitive matches was when early League Cup ties were played over two legs. Must have been late 70’s and we won 5-0 at home and 3-0 away. Same again would be good. Mind you we were good. Phil Boyer tore them a new one. Helped erase an embarrassing 1-0 home defeat in the FA Cup in 1974. Anyone recall another game?
You're right that those 3 were the last times we played them. Obviously I don't recall it personally but think we played them in the old division 3 too.
Funnily enough i've just been scouring YT for a Saints v Wrexham video and checked this stats site for reference... https://www.11v11.com/teams/southampton/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Wrexham/ So we've played them only 7 times in total, winning 4 and losing 3. The last league meeting was in 1960 and the last ever meeting was in 1979. Sadly there is no video record of any of the matches.
I’m no script writer, but playing your first match in the championship and getting thumped by your former premier league opponents, would be really good for building the underdog narrative
Now don't take this to heart DTLW, but there's a reason you can't remember the the last time you were asked to do a match thread if you wrote a similar poem in that one too. I only hope Saints' season starts off better than yours has. We're going to lose this one aren't we? The media will be wetting themselves (or worse) in the hope of a hollywood blockbuster and I can think of no better team than Saints to give them their wish. Wrexham will get Rocky while Saints' fans will get Brokeback Mountain. People have said "Don't overestimate the Championship, we should have enough for at least the play offs". That, I think is grossly overestimating Saints. We were ****e last season and I have no reason to think we will be anything other than ****e in this one. No reason yet anyway. Brokeback Mountain 0-2 Rocky
Saints to win by 2. Wrexham will be very difficult to play against this season but with so many new signings and an ageing side around them, I think we'll have too much.
We'll lose 2-0 Happy clappers will talk about how positive we were in the second half and how being **** with recruitment definitely isn't SR's fault, it's the Premier League's (or something) and that BBD will definitely come good at this level he just needs time
Really hard game to predict. Saints have the players to win but will they play. I am not sure anyone knows: Downes, Dibbling, Fernandes would give us substantially higher quality.
Downes definitely won't, he hasn't played for weeks. Fernandes has had about an hour total in the past 3 weeks so he will be on the bench at best. The only one that has any chance of starting is Dibling. He got 60 mins the other day so might start, but given the transfer interest then maybe not!
I am not sure that 'us' happy clappers are that positive anymore. As a self confessed 'happy clapper', after last year I will start to clap less and not so happily if we have a **** start.
