You dont half talk **** sometimes Dai. We can spend a lot of money trying to stay up and still go down, or, spend wisely and stay up, which we have always done. We need to stay within financial limits in case the worst happens.
Look at the teams that have gambled and spent big, especially clubs with a limited fan base like us.
I am a relativley a young fan (34) and people talk about the Toshak era. Looking at the 4 great years he gave us, he, and people and chairmen with the same ethos as you, condemned us to 30 years struggling and almost falling out of the league. I personally would like to build this club steadily and with Swansea Citys best interest at heart.

It's not me who said we would never get here under the watchful eye ( on his wallet ) of Huw . It is a bit amusing though to watch you try to justify being so , so wrong though . No one will listen to you now cause your " The boy who cried money " more than one two many times

Aren't the wages the big stumbling block for clubs like the Swans, not the transfer fee?

We do have money to spend on players, but they must come into our wage structure. We could afford to spend 10 mil on one player, because his re-sale value would be similar, but where are you going to find a 10 mil player who will agree to our wage structure? If we had to pay someone 30,000 a week for example, and got relegated, we would have to sell that player immediately, and that would put us in a **** bargaining situation.
So, unless signings can guarantee survival (maybe we will sign Rooney or Gerrard or Van Persie) they would have to be prepared to pay for less wages than at other clubs, so that we can afford to pay them if we get relegated.

Sorry 99 , a bit disrespectful there reading my last post toward you . I'm sure you know a lot more about the goings on around the club . But I do feel as strong as you about transfers , it just were each on different sides of the fence . P.S. I think guys whose contracts are up , or going to be up in the summer & transfer in January always get an absorbent wage structure . Because there's no up front money the club has to pay outright , the player uses that as a bargaining chip to extract more money for himself through wages . A lot of clubs drop back down to the Championship burdened with at least a few of these long term wages & players can milk club till the contract's over .

I think most people agree, not all,we do need to spend money, hopefully to keep us up,yes nothing is guaranteed, but for people to say 3-5 million in this day and age and in the premiere,to me thats too little.10 million is still very small, but it is progress. No 1 said we needed 1 player at 10 mill +.We could buy 2-3 players from outside of the Uk to improve our squad,to mix it up a bit. What is happening to all this big money we Swansea are inheriting. So to put 10 mill is quite a small amount.I think Brendan and the Scouts understand we can not afford a superstar. They brought an unknown Vorm to us and he has turned into a star,he only cost 1.5.So to have AVAILABLE 10mill to Brendan,i think he could do wonders. If we do get relegated after spending 10mill,it would not break the bank and we did try to stay up.I am with Super swan with this. Most of us want the same,to be playing next season with the big boys.

To anyone saying we can afford to spend 10mil... can they prove that? Seems people are convinced we've got a burgeoning bank account. We already spent more than the other two promoted teams, and given our financial starting position was probably weaker, that should be indicative of how much we're going to spend in January.

I certainly dont know how our financial situation is,but if we have it ,i think we should invest it wisely.I dont care about other teams finances, they can spend 100 million if they have the budget to do that.As i said previously,if we had 10 mill ,i think Brendan and staff would spend it wisely.

scott i think QPR will spend buckets in Jan. if anyone knows the scouts get them to look at Toomy Oar (winger) in Holland, he is an international ffs and will cost nothing and he is 20. Holland, Ireland, etc seem to be were all the gems are coming from for little money atm

the TV revenue goes up from something like £2m in the championship to at least £30m if you finish bottom, there is one source of extra revenue.

    and QPR.

30 million, that should cover the extra salaries, plus the extra payment from the premiere league.i think 10 mill is not alot to ask for,to keep us hopefully playing with the best.Surely its worth a LITTLE gamble to keep us up or try to keep us up.

If the board gives the go ahead , I'm happy with 10 million , maybe even more if they say so . Doesn't change my mind about only wanting it spent on a player or two though . A couple of great players that we could recoup most of it back if we should drop . Where the team has come from the last half dozen seasons & the way they've done it , makes the board " A god like group " to me .

It's not quite that simple though, because our figures over the last few years show that without player sales/compo we would've run at a slight loss. On top of that, all our players no doubt got bonuses, and improved contracts, as a result of promotion, and several key players were handed new contracts on top of that, tying up more funds there. We spent, what, about £8mil in the summer, and I'd imagine they'e earmarked a maximum of 10-12 million for transfers, and I see no reason why that would change. Everyone else spends mega-money, we don't, and I'm glad of that.

well when you think that we have spent under £9 million since we reached the premiership scott what would you say??? can we afford a pittance of £10 million on 3 or at the most 4 players in january or do you think the club has stashed millions away for themselves when they retire..<laugh> Of course we have plenty of money in the pot for transfers......Brendan wants 6 players by the time the window closes.......even £10 million wont buy 6 players good enough in the premiership.....

An average wage of £10k per week for 25 players (probably unrealistically low) gives a projected annual wage bill of £13,000,000. Add in the 8-9 million we spent in the summer and that's over £20,000,000 already. Add in the fact that we'll have set money aside for training facilities and youth academy upgrades, and that probably takes us up to £30,000,000. Add into that player bonuses throughout the year, backroom staff wages, and player wages who are not in the 25 player squad, and we're probably up to pushing £35,000,000.

We only get around £40,000,000 for being the Premiership this year, so it makes sense if we only spend 3-5 million this transfer window. The rest of the "£90,000,000" is parachute payments. Let me ask you this, would you deploy your parachute before you jump out of the plane where it'll get tangled and useless? Or would you do it after you'll fallen out of the plane to save you from hitting the ground? The parachute payments are not designed to be spent before we get relegated. If we spend all the money on players that could eventually take us down, where do we get the money to strengthen the squad to bring us back up? Spend money wisely when you have it is the safest way to do it. That way, if we do get relegated, we'll at least have one of the biggest budgets in the Championship. As opposed to being skint with a relegated squad that's low on confidence...

Another thing to think about is that if the parachute payments (which are spread over 4 years) are spent now, the club will be around £40-50million in debt. In the worst case scenario (relegation), the money will only be put into our club at a fixed rate per annum. Then you have to factor in the unbelievable amount of interest that the debt will have accumulated over those 4 years, and you realise the parachute payments won't actually pay off the debt.

The money may be 'promised' to us, but to spend the money without actually having it yet costs the club more money (interest). And when you spend money that you don't have in such astronomical amounts, you also rack up astronomical amounts of interest. It just doesn't sit right with me, the club isn't big enough or successful enough to justify spending such large sums of money that it doesn't have, as if we do get relegated (which is possible whether we spend or not), we'll be up s**t creek without a paddle.

This is what us sensible fans are thinking mate <ok> Dai has a personal agenda against the club, and wants to see us fail , so he can give us all, and Huw Jenkins the big, I told you so. The way we are spending at the moment is going to be a large drain on funds long term if we do go down. Look at similar football clubs who have gone up, or even mid table clubs and what they have spent, its no where near the 10+million that people expect us to spend. If we spend all this money and go down, how are we meant to improve the infrastructure of the club, let alone keep our heads above water, and, with a CCC fanbase of around 15000, how is that sustainable. Its a balancing act, that few clubs get right.
