Agreed. He only has 2 years left on his contract so we won't be getting anywhere near £45m next season. Assuming no other clubs have expressed an interest, it would be good business in the circumstances.
£40m+ is fair for Dibbling. There's a chance he stays, we dont go up and hes worth half that next summer. So so glad he came back from Chelsea
Agree, deal for £40m and a sell-on clause so that if he does take the leap and become of interest to the big six (or however many it is now) that we get another £10m-£15m down the line to take the total value of the deal beyond £50m and towards £60m
Blackmore looks to have tweeted something similar. Which reads to me like PR. Don’t think we should be expected a goalkeeper to take the first team spot. Although I assume we need a third keeper
It's normally set on profit right? If so, let's say he then moved later at £100m, £60m would be profit and we'd need 20% of that to receive £12m. That's probably quite an ask as a sell on from a PL team, isn't it?
Yeah that'll be the club pushing out (via their chosen methods) the message of don't expect a goalkeeper. Expect another one in the Echo soon
Spors said at the end of last season that we were going to have a very very busy summer. It definitely sounds as if it’s heating up on the departures. However, we really need to get some attacking threat in soon in CM and out wide as it looks like we’ll be starting the season with no Dibling and Fernandes, so are really limited in the creation department, as has been shown in previous season. Hopefully with this money coming in, targets are being lined up as Will Still hinted after the Espanyol game.
Every day we get closer to the start of the season a little bit of my loses a bit of hope. I am getting more and more 'not sure' about this. Anyone who thinks Bazuna or McCarthy is a solid starter in goal for the first team I would love to hear their detailed reasons and show video highlights of the reliability of either keeper. I think we are going to be average next season. Still my wife's 6-monthly scan on Wednesday so football can suck my big toe, I've got more important things to worry about.
Quiz time During the 2023/24 season, Southampton went on a club record 25 games unbeaten, 22 league fixtures and 9 clean sheets. Who was in goal for the league fixtures during this record run?
Also Quiz time; who was statistically the worst goalkeeper in the championship during that 23/24 season? Ditto the 22/23 premier league season? Anyone can suit statistics to their argument
Yeah, I'm leaning more towards an average season to be honest. I'm genuinely excited for the season, but I don't have high expectations. Particularly if the goalkeeper situation isn't resolved. All the best for Wednesday.
Still sets his team out to be stout, which compared with Martins obsession with GK's overplaying with their feet and keeping the ball at all costs will make a difference regardless of who is in goal. A better metric would be what percentage of saves were made against shots that should vs shouldn't have been scored.
lol - anyone who is “cool” with Bazunu and McCarthy playing next season is not claiming anything more than that they’re capable of doing an ok job at this level. If he can play in an unbeaten team then he can’t be as incompetent as many try and make out. I’m not a huge fan of Stephens getting a contract extension, but I’m not mad enough to think our promotion chances are in tatters because of it
In fairness Stephens is a much more competent championship player than Bazunu. Agree his new contract doesn't really affect our chances of automatic promotion. Whereas in my opinion having Bazunu as first choice definitely will as he's simply not up to that standard. I do think McCarthy would be fine though. I think the unbeaten run comment is rather simplistic though. His only real contribution to that was his last minute equaliser at Preston, and he was at fault for at least one of their two goals so it's swings and roundabouts really.
My view on goalkeepers (for this league) is they are only as good as their defence. If we can be more solid, stop playing suicideball (We have thank god), then the keeper only has to be competent at this level and not a world beater as he will face less pressure. Also, we are underestimating the gulf between the Premier League and the Championship as we conceded over 60 goals last time around and still got promoted.
