French is officially a second language in Canada mate, all of their federal institutions are bilingual. Not sure if all Canadians can speak french, but most places I've been in Canada they are bilingual. Obviously places like Quebec are hugely French influenced. But even in the time I've spent around Vancouver, Whistler and Tofino a lot of people speak French.

Not denying that mate. Just my experience is different. Jamaica is mainly US and Canadians in the resorts, the English speaking Canadians have always told me they don’t speak any French.

I kind of sense an underlying animosity tbh.

Cnuts should learn proper English themselves and not the ‘US English’ that they’ve decided to invent for themselves.

159 hunger-related deaths since the start of the war.

Obviously not good at all, but putting that into context of a "famine", that equates to one person every other day.

The imminent catastrophe we keep being warned about just isn't unfolding.

Nobody has claimed this has been since the start of the war, tbf. It’s only recently that the lack of food has been apparent.

    Absolutely not the case.

This has been going on since almost the start of the war. The 'report' below from the IPC was published in Dec 2023 and warned that up to 1.1 million people faced "imminent famine" by May 2024 if things didn't change. It claimed based on "reasonable evidence" that close to 210,000 people faced 'catastrophe' (Phase 5) from starvation, i.e. we can expect that many to die.

    https://www.ipcinfo.org/ipcinfo-website/alerts-archive/issue-97/en/

IPC released another report in Oct 2024 that downgraded its Phase 5 estimate to 133,000 people. This time, the report was debated at the highest level of the UN:

    https://www.securitycouncilreport.o...iefing-on-risk-of-famine-in-northern-gaza.php

Both reports and the debate have since been revealed to have been absolute bollocks.

    Wrong

Famine isn’t something that happens overnight. I.e it one day you have a well nourished population and the next you’re in famine.

It’s a slow creep, which is what the agencies have been warning about. And then you reach a tipping point, which is where is looks like it’s heading now

Hence the need to accelerate aid and end the inhumane withholding of supplies by Israel into Gaza.

I saw a report yesterday that said the incidents of malnutrition in pregnant and lactating mothers had quadrupled since May. And that, is a direct example of how food runs out slowly and then the problems start to stack up quickly.

I take that point, of course, but isn't that exactly what the IPC report was doing? Warning in December 2023 that with the passage of five months, over 200,000 people would face imminent starvation?

    Which simply didn't happen.

I didn’t read the reports, and the timeframes are not an exact science

but what the aid agencies have warned about, is now coming to fruition.

For balance, I think they can be separated.

There’s definitely been times where the reporting has been sensationalised, talking about imminent deaths in a 24/48 hour timeframe which never come to fruition.

However, there’s absolutely a dire shortage of aid now. That much is obvious.

Are they still pumping the aid in only by air and none by road, if so nothing is going to change. They can only dumped so many pallets from them planes, last I heard they need like 700 trucks a day. I'd have a guess many of the kids on the fringe in that hospital are probably already dead.

I’d be out looking for hostages to release if it’s that big an issue.

Hamas and any other militia out there, don’t care about them starving when their fighters will be shovelling 3-4 meals a day down their throats. They aren’t going without. Normal civilians aren’t going to try and release hostages. Hamas would just shoot them dead for the cheek of it.

Piskie said there’s food being sold at the market and at inflated prices. I don’t understand that, however. If there’s food available and people are starving to death surely you just give them it and wrap up your business. The general population clearly don’t look out for each other or care about each, if that’s the case.

All that means though is the people at the bottom of the pile, who probably always live in poverty, have nowhere to turn too. These are the people that need help but it’s a pretty much impossible job identifying them and pulling them out the crowd to make sure they’re looked after.

To sum up, I do think some people are going through a famine but it will also absolutely be sensationalised to make it look on a bigger scale than it actually is.

I can’t stand that prick <laugh> think he’s getting way above his station here.

I also disagree with Starmer saying he’ll recognise a Palestinian state even if Hamas don’t release the hostages. Sends out the total wrong message that they’re literally being rewarded and getting what they want through terrorism.
