We’re actually in a holiday cottage just outside Staithes this week with three grandchildren and spent the day on the beach at Sandsend. Completely forgot about tonight’s game, so just playing catch-up.
Giles was immense first half. Ajayi, Dremeh, and Hughes were solid, continued by Egan when he came on. Crooks looked far fitter than last season and Kamara looked a handful. The youngsters looked bright when they came on. What’s not to like? Yes it was only a friendly but we’ve still got our our first choice wingers to come back. With more incoming though, there will be undoubtedly be more departures.
Can we afford any more departures? By my count we have: 3 keepers 4 full backs (if you include Williams) 4 centre backs Very few midfielders (depending on registrations) 4 wingers 1 striker Even if we sign Lundstram, Akintola, McBurnie and Destan, I can't see us being able to shift anyone else? Other than the likes of Furlong and Vaughan.
Highly entertaining for a pre-season match, and nice to watch City again. Onwards and upwards, to the chagrin of some. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
There's surely no chance he's never played the holding midfield role before? That cameo was a joke against that level of opposition for a lad who's just arrived from the LOI
I said in a thread a while back I was quietly confident in Jak2, and it does look like he’s making a difference, even if it is pre-season. I’m hopeful and confident of a good start.
City fans walking out of stadium after game smiling shock! Well I enjoyed that tonight. After such a disappointing summer off the field I turned up tonight fearing the worse, and a four or five nil thrashing to a backdrop of screaming, gloating, Makems. How wrong was I? Cracking game for a friendly and City more then matched the Premier League new boys. We should have been one up when Kamara put a golden opportunity just past the post after a flowing, lightening quick City move and of course Sunderland went up to the other end and scored. It looked an easy goal too, here we go.... But City were knocking the ball about well all over the field and actually looked good. Crooks was running things and crashing into tackles, a proper beast, Drameh was impressive too, in fact they all were. Our equaliser looked a bit bizarre though, they had the ball one second and suddenly, could have been from a back pass, but the ball appeared in the middle of the Sunderland goal at the feet of Tinsdale and he tried to lob the keeper, who parried the shot but the young Tiger followed up and slotted the ball home. 1-1 and from then on we bossed the game. Joseph was particularly impressive and this was by far his most influential game for us, especially the second half when his strong solo run, half the length of the field, made the second goal scored by Kamara. The new lad from Man City came on and Joseph set him up within seconds, then again when the new loanee smacked a shot against the post. Loads of changes on 70 mins, none of which changed the flow of the game of which City were dominating. So for me 10/10, and I know it was 'only' a friendly but we were impressive and every player looked up for it and played a part and no-one was more surprised then me. Standing ovation at the end. Attendance 6,528. MOTM 1. Crooks 2. Joseph 3. Drameh. McCarthy was very, very impressive when he came on as was Vaughan. Slater played well too. No-one had a bad game and I cannot recall anyone misplacing a pass or missing a tackle.
Its only pre season but the amount of **** some of these lads have had from our fans, some of them who hadn't kicked a ball for us yet... Well right now they're making a bit of a statement. And bear in mind, we're far from a full strength side at the moment. As has been said so many times over the past few years, if we had a manager that was more encouraging with attacking play and willing to let the team actually have a go at the opposition, rather than 99% safety first, we'd have a side capable of mixing it up rather than whimpering out so often. If we can carry this attitude and ethos into the league with us, we should have a decent season. If we can find a way to bolster the squad in the right places, we could have a good season. Not getting carried away here, but it's certainly positive signs for the season ahead. Not arsed about the results, but the way we've played has been encouraging.
He just doesn’t look fazed at all does he? Receive the ball facing his own goal, play it one touch across to break pressure. No problem. Make a recovery tackle like the attacker isn’t even there and come away with the ball. No problem. Drive the ball forward skinning an experienced defender and winning a foul. No problem. Sky is the limit for this lad.
Brown, Tinsdale and McCarthy have shown enough in pre-season to be involved in the first team this season. At the very least, they should make the bench given our situation. Hopefully, at least one of them can break through and become the next Lewis-Potter or Greaves.
I know he scored a decent goal tonight but Tinsdale seems to suffer from Harry Vaughanitis in getting crowded out the game in the limited time I’ve watched him. Not to say he can’t step up but Brown and McCarthy look like genuine prospects to me for the upcoming season
I agree. I included Tinsdale because he’s had as many minutes as the other two but I do think Brown and McCarthy are better.
Very impressed, makes it even more frustrating Sergej doesn’t have a proper team but oh well let’s see what happens
Not being one fawn over 'Georgie' Vaughan in the past I'd put Brown in the situation perhaps Harry was 18 months ago. But ultimately if a decent National or L2 loan came up where he'd be competing for a start, then we'd be holding him back if we didn't do that. McCarthy looks like he can handle it physically and might be useful. And Vaughan seems to have bulked a bit too. I wouldn't have any issue with those 2 being in and around the squad this season. The rest though needs to be loaned out if poss for more regular minutes once the holes in the squad are filled by seniors.
Forgot about this one today, good result, but we’ll see how it goes v Coventry before I get too excited, even then…. Anyway, as a comparison to Stockport, how was it? I’ve seen a lot of praise for the kids, is this just pre season potential or is it genuine, can be in & around the first team? Final note, glad Kamara got a goal, I like him, if he goes elsewhere he’ll be a great player because of his experience with us & won’t have the crowd on his back.
I can see McCarthy being around the squad this season, particularly until Matazo is back fully fit, we are short in midfield, and he looks as if he can certainly handle the step-up.
He's a centre half though. Similar build to Alfie Jones when he first joined. He looked decent doing a job in the 6 too for a while.
