Vintage - Humidity 9/2 love this horse, reminds me of Chaldean, not flashy but has the tactical speed to always be in the right place at the right time and a relentless galloper to the line, holding off horses who have to work hard to get to him from behind Dorset had a very soft lead on the Curragh conveyor belt for his maiden win, this is a fair step up in class and if he was trained by anyone else I doubt he would be a short price fav, he will certainly know hes been in a race with Humidity like Chaldean, I think Humidity is the type who will keep being underestimated but can go right to the top level in the 2yo division, and ive backed him for the Guineas as well, Balding has proven he can compete in recent years and 20/1 is well worth a punt
I had to laugh when I saw that today’s ITV7 includes the Class 6 amateur riders’ race and the Class 6 seller at Beverley. An eight race card to start Inglorious Goodwood, with plenty of opportunities for the bookies to fleece punters on big field handicaps and sprints. The opener contains a Gosden horse raised 9lb for winning a handicap on the kitty litter, a Haggas horse raised 8lb for winning on handicap debut on the soft at Chester and a lightly-raced Varian horse that was fourth on seasonal debut after nearly a year off. The Vintage Stakes (1.55) looks to be between the Chesham winner Humidity and the Ballydoyle contender Dorset (ironically running in Sussex) with the July Stakes winner Zavateri having to carry a 3lb penalty. Reliable yardstick Do Or Do Not might give us a guide to the value of the form having been second in the Coventry and the July Stakes. The Lennox Stakes (2.30) presents a number of issues. Of the twelve declared it is easy to eliminate most of the outsiders. It is hard to make a case for Iberian, fifth in the Jubilee Stakes last time but five and a half lengths behind the winner. Three year old Intrusively has been well beaten in two handicaps in 2025 and is clearly here because he was third in the Richmond last year and likes the track. Nostrum has failed to beat a runner home in two starts this term, including the Group 3 at York won by Quinault (Lake Forest sixth). Witness Stand has been beaten in two Listed races and looks likely to be one of those contesting the lead here, making sure this will be a strongly run heat. The cheekpieces have been fitted to last year’s winner Audience, who might also be up contesting the lead having done nothing in two starts. Kinross has won twice and placed twice in this race and is 5lb better off with Ten Bob Tony, who beat him last time when both were re-appearing. Alyanaabi was down the field in that Haydock Group 3 along with Audience and there is no obvious reason why either of those should suddenly reverse that running. In three starts in 2025, Lake Forest has failed to make the frame, most lately behind Quinault, but I expect him to be held up and brought late. Three year olds have won once in the last four runnings providing 11 of the 33 runners but that one winner (Sandrine) was rated 108 and the highest rated 3yo was 114. There is no obvious improver amongst the old guard and I cannot see Audience running to his 120 top rating. Today’s favourite will be Jonquil (rated 115) who won the Greenham but then skipped HQ to run second at Longchamp in the Poulains. He was then dropped to sprinting in the Commonwealth Cup but never got involved and now returns to seven furlongs. Having done my money on him ante post for the 2000 Guineas, I am not chasing my losses here but instead going for the remaining three year old in the field, NOBLE CHAMPION (rated 116). Ed Walker’s charge has been down the field twice at Newbury (the first of those the Greenham) but was an impressive (if unexpected at 25/1) winner of the Jersey Stakes last time. The risk is that he gets involved in a fight for the lead rather than Kieran Shoemark having the sense to leave that fight to others. With eight lined up for the Goodwood Cup (3.05), this looks like a race to avoid as it may become a tactical affair and the front four in the betting, from two yards, all look short enough in the betting. Three year old Scandinavia has the services of Wayne Lordan as Ryan Moore has opted for O’Brien’s other runner Gold Cup runner up Illinois. Fourth in the Gold Cup Sweet William has the services of Rab Havlin while the other Gosden runner French Master steps straight into the top pattern level for stayers after winning the Copper Horse handicap at Ascot.
Not so Glorious Goodward...!! That's only as i never do well here... 1:20 - Westridge, 10/1 * 1:55 - Humidity, 5/1 2:30 - Ten Bob Tony, 15/2 * 3:05 - Illinois, 7/4 3:45 - Miss Attitude, 18/1 * 4:20 - Anashhad, 8/1 * 4:55 - Protest, 13/2 5:30 - Sea Emily Run, 10/1 Those with a * next to them carry the extra burden of a shilling by me, so avoid at all costs...!! Good luck to you all if you are having a play today...
I was astonished to note that there were Zero tips for Humidity in the Racing Post selection box. 5 tipped Dorset 3 tipped the maiden after four runs Do Or Do Not 1 tip Andab 1 tip Zavateri 1 tip for rank outsider Gharma Sutra, who won his only start at Ffos Las. I doubt Dorset is in Aidan O Brien's top five and he doesn't tend to take his best to the UK until the Group 1 2yo races start. He seems rank bad value with several promising sorts opposing. Humidity won the Chesham in good enough style but the runner up was porked at 2/13 at Ayr. No bet for me
Best price Zavateri 25/1 for next year's 2000 Guineas. Dorset and Humidity are available at 66/1 in places now. Unibet want to get a grip on themselves regarding their 2000 Guineas quotes, as they have a filly in their betting and also the 3YO Scoville as well. I am pretty sure the authorities will not let William Haggas run a 4YO in the 2000 Guineas. Ffs
Delighted with my St Leger horse Scandinavia there. Last horse to win today's race as a 3YO was Stradivarius. Shame for Trueshan, it looked bad for him there. I just wonder if Scandinavia will actually go to the Leger, Aidan has just said it looks an obvious next step, adding that he handled cut in the ground today. Coral obviously think he will, as they go a miserly Evs for the St Leger now.
Clearly the place to be in the Vintage Stakes was not at the front end. The pacesetter ended up last, the favourite Dorset sat third or fourth and came under pressure before Humidity and neither of them were still around for the photo. Dorset went for the gap on the rail but was never going forward while Zavateri pushed his way through and the runner up Morris Dancer flew from the back. Another place for Do Or Do Not makes the form look reliable and the winner had a 3lb penalty so is value for more. After the front runners cut their own throats in the juvenile race, the front three dominated the Lennox Stakes where the second favourite Kinross never went in the stalls having been kicked by the favourite Audience; and my pick Noble Champion was pulled up. I certainly would not have fancied the winner Witness Stand and the only hold up horse to get in the race was Lake Forest. On viewing it is very easy to knock the form of this race as most of the field never got in it! Ryan picked the wrong Ballydoyle inmate in the Goodwood Cup and the punters did not want Illinois. I thought that Moore would try to make the fractions and kick on in the straight but he could not shake the three year old and Scandinavia picked him off. It was hard to know what to make of the two Gosden runners as Sweet William and French Master both blew the start, the latter starting to make a habit of being a fast finisher that will empty punters’ pockets by arriving too late too often. Of course, the race was overshadowed by the tragic injury to old boy Trueshan. Mixed results on the opening day of Inglorious Goodwood allowed the bookie chaps to leave with fuller satchels.
