Not quite the same physically, no - but organised and read the game well, fast and smooth across the ground, generally unflappable (except when Graeme Sharp was around, for some reason) and even better at bringing the ball forward.
Granted I didn’t see as much of Hansen as I have of VVD and my understanding of the game was totally different also tbf the game was totally different VVD reminds me of Rio tbh - for me the difference was you didn’t know Hansen was around- he was so effective VVD - you know he is around I think Hansen is right up there in the greats tbph I also loved Maldini - just pure class for me
Ladies doing it again for England. Back to back Euros. 3 in a row for the manager as well. Impressive stuff that.
For all Spain's possession, they didn't look much of a threat in front of goal. England's style was pretty horrendous to watch, very low block and lump it forward. BUT they won, so who cares in the end.
It was like watching Arsenal , all the ball, possession and players in the opposition half but couldn’t score in a brothel.
Well done to England, but I'll be pretty glad to get back to men's football where the commentator acknowledges a poor cross as a poor cross and a routine save as a routine save rather than World class.
Let’s be honest, England for the most of the final, including extra time were poor, just defending and couldn’t pass 2 yards to each other. Spain technically looked light years ahead of England, but they didn’t have a striker with the ability to put the ball in the back of the net with the chances they created.
Let me know what channels you’re watching when it comes to the men’s games so I can switch over in that case as all I get is Neville and carragher talking bollocks for most of the games and making weird noises. In hoping with the new online safety act that maybe those noises are now classed as over 18 only and I can just not verify my age so don’t have to listen to them.
There's no such thing as tournament football. That's just annexcuse for being ****. Spain forgot to keep attacking and win the game. The standard in the tournament felt way below the prior two
Totally wrong. Benitez was brilliant at it. Tournament football is about not losing. You can go a whole tournament drawing games and end up winning the thing. You can’t do that in the league as shown by us finishing 2nd under him when we only lost a couple games but drew something like 11? Be solid in defence, don’t give up chances and nick a 1-0 then a couple of draws gets you out of the group with 5 points. 5/9 doesn’t win you leagues but can get your to later tournaments. .
I think Greece proved tournament football. Absolute ****e team, but played solid, defended in numbers but found a way to win games and won the Final against Portugal's 'Golden Generation'
Excuse for playing **** and trying to scrape by. The law of averages says you'll be able to find some example in a ll the tournament t ever played to support just about anything. You wont find many successful "tournament" teams. You will find a lot of sides that either have the best side or play as a team and to their own strengths winning. As I said. This women's tournament in general (not just england) was quite a lot poorer than the prior two. Just didn't look like a lot of real talent on show. Too many heavy touch player or pondering on the ball and not going for it.
My view of what i saw in the tournament. Agreeing was the only real talent in English colours. The rest were meh. She on the other had and had the pace and power and ability to hit the ball. Spain were trying to walk it in. Falling over the ball in tight space then and no end product to speak of. None were willing to shift the ball and hit it at all. The women's game seems to need space and catch someone on the counter for something to happen. A real lack of ability to break down a set defence. Even the England goal showed this. It's a big cross over but the Spanish defence was poor. No communication, their cb looked at russo twice but hung round the near post where there was no danger and left her partner on two players. That space was created by getting up the park fast and it was in on their back 4 where the error came from. England should have been out of this 4 times but Sweden let them off twice with the single worst ever pen shoot out and a woeful throwing of a 2 goal lead away Italy led and a hopeful hoof across was spilled late And now Spain stopped attacking and let England back in before another poor showing on the pens Ho estly I wonder if a boys u16 team could beat England on pens cos tbh that was dreadful. Every pen is telegraphed. There was no run up to the ball to speak of. The angle of approach closed one half of the goal most of the time You could tell England had tried to prepare even through they were poor enough still. They learned from Sweden debacle. How Spain didn't see England grinding though all 3 knockout games looming for the kicks I dont know but the way they took some of those a child would be ashamed. The standard imo in the world cup and last euros was higher than this tournament.
