It's not uncool and it's a fair point. I try to drive within the speed limit in residential areas, but often break it on motorways/main roads.

A close friend killed a 6 year old girl in Cottingham, when we were 18. In the eyes of the law, it was 'her fault' as she cycled into the road from her driveway which was a hill, but it always haunted him that perhaps he was driving too fast and could have been avoided. A horrific accident that could have probably happened to any of us at some point, if honest.

Why the rush? If you drive at 35 rather than 30 you will probably get there less than a minute earlier. It’s barmy.

This is my feeling. I think for some people the car is just a source of stress. It's supposed to be a convenience but they end up permanently running late, complaining about traffic, roadworks and other road users and then they will inevitably be more dangerous drivers as a result of always being in a stress and a rush. The big safety benefit of driverless vehicles will be eliminating the effect of those human emotions.

The thing is, British people don’t like to be told what to do and push the limit whatever it is. Most people drive a lot faster than 70mph on the motorway, so it is already kind of is 80mph. If you officially put it up, those same drivers start doing 90mph.

If you drive from Hull to London at 77mph you’ll get there 16 minutes quicker. It’s pointless.

You can shave off 20 mins driving home from manny airport if you give it some through the Pennines.

Yes, where I’ve just driven back from. Driving in France is brilliant. Everyone pulls out and returns to the slow lane once they have overtaken. Shame the same doesn’t apply on UK roads. It would clear a lot of congestion issues.

There are some stretches of road that have a high collision rate. Statistically, the more time you spend in such areas, the more chance you will be involved in a collision, so it's far safer to put your foot down so you spend as little time as possible in high risk zones. :emoticon-0147-emo:

I agree, it's brilliant, for one simple reason, there's less traffic. Obviously cities have traffic issues like anywhere else but outside that there's just far, far less traffic.

    Completely true
I wasn’t rushing, but had just come off a roundabout and accelerated on the other side.
Modern cars accelerate fast and are quiet and it’s a fine line in 30’s
Generally I use cruise control to stick at 30 or maybe a little quicker if traffic is going up to 32 or 33 and I’m doing that when I flick it on. Never more than 33. In fact I did this then too (and it wasn’t residential, it was past fields on both sides) but I was going 35 when I flicked it on and braked but it had already spotted me.

Having said all that I was wrong and that’s entirely my fault.

I get that. I would argue until the cows come home that both of mine were not me driving recklessly or being a nob and speeding, it's a real fine line in the early 30s

Got done week before last taking step daughter to the vets to collect her rabbit. My fault not concentrating. Stopped at lights. Lights changed and accelerated away. Didn't think I could reach 37mph in such a short distance.

You can’t do 80 down the M1 for many more than a mile or two , 25 years ago you could get to London quicker by using the outer lane a lot . For the past 10 years you have no idea how long the trip will take due to congestion and roadworks in different places . I did it so expected a certain length of time and planned for it .

Last footnote , all my points up to 9 were on motorways doing about 82 on pretty empty stretches in quiet periods . Ex wife got all hers homing around suburbia doing about 38 in silly places . Point is too many dogs kids and stupid people around .
