There’s 375 local authorities or councils in the UK, so that 1.5m homes equates to around 4000 new homes per council. There’s also 8 million homes or 21,000 homes per council (I know this method of maths is not an exact science) that are over 80 years old. Simple logic suggests that we do need to renew housing stock and aging infrastructure associated with these houses.
Every government in my memory has called for new homes, this isn’t something that Labour has suddenly thrust upon us.

Might also help if we regenerated some of the existing (empty) housing stock

I think it’s around 700k empty homes. The issue is that councils would have to fund this and restoring homes would be both expensive and time consuming with no direct help from the government. It’s far easier to grant planning permission and let developers solve the problem.

Different issue for me. Anyone, and I certainly include myself in that, who has bought something online has contributed to the decline of the high street. I’m not sure what councils can do TBH.

Plus there's no incentive for councils to build homes while Right to Buy is in place.

Patients at GP surgeries in Gloucestershire will be given the chance to attend games at National League side Forest Green Rovers as an alternative to medication as part of a trial.

Does seem a bit much considering the pay increases they’ve had after real wages fell so much over the last 15 years or so. The pay isn’t brilliant for what they do but no junior doctor today can really say they didn’t know what they were signing up for and the benefits are very good. A modest wage rise in real terms over the rest of this Parliament feels like a fair compromise.

They could offer free parking, at least for the first hour. Lots of folk want to pop into town and support their local butcher, baker, cafe etc but are put off by having to pay £2.50 just to park for an hour. Especially when councils have given the green light to so many out of town retail parks, where parking is free and Supermarkets offer everything under one roof

They could also make some incentives around business rates, scrapping them for start ups for the first 3 years or drastically reducing them for indie shops. But I understand that this along with parking is a big source of revenue for cash strapped councils.
