I saw that piece in the Telegraph and I thought it was quite amusing the way that it was written. There was emphasis on the way that Moody’s have “upgraded” Argentina’s credit status. There was little mention of the fact that they now have a rating of “CAA1” up from “CAA3”. “CAA1” is a high credit risk, poor quality and near to or in default. “CAA3” is a high credit risk, poor quality and near to or in default. The single word term for both of these ratings is “JUNK”. What Matthew Lynn did do was highlight how ‘chainsaw’ Milei’s measures have created a real GDP growth forecast of 5.7%, trailing only India, miles ahead of the UK, France and Germany (all less than 2%) and more than twice the USA. Perhaps you need to define “the rich”. The top 0.1% of income tax payers contribute 5% of all income tax, the top 1% contribute 30% of all income tax and the top 10% contribute 60% of all income tax receipts. Obviously they are not paying their ‘fair share’. Keef cannot print money as that is the preserve of the Bank of England (BoE); however, the Treasury can issue gilts (government bonds – more debt), although the market decides how much interest will have to be paid on that borrowing. Currently gilt yields are higher than they were after the BoE/Truss debacle, such is the lack of confidence in Keef’s neighbour.
Ken Clarke balanced the books as did Gordon Brown. We are getting up towards £3Trillion in debt with an annual interest bill of over £100Billion to service our loans. I know in reality it is all made up money as nobody actually possesses enough gold to back up their currency any longer but even so this ludicrous amount of debt is holding us back. The more we borrow the worse our credit is and subsequently the more we pay in higher interest rates. It took until 2006 to pay off what we borrowed during WW2, it took until 2015 to pay off the debts from the Napoleonic wars and in the same year we finally paid off the reparations debts of slavery. How many more centuries will it take to be debt free or are we happy living on tick for the rest of history or at least until we become a Caliphate?
