Isn't that where Stan or Cathal get their chance on the bench?

At some point those lads need to play.

I think in an ideal world I’d agree with you - but I’m concerned about where this LB is coming from.

I think letting Macca go is the bigger mistake than letting Jones go for this reason. If Giles is going to start our season as first choice LB (which looks likely) I’d rather dedicate the money we are going to need for the midfield and attacking places, rather than spend it at LB when we’ve just let adequate cover go for peanuts.

I suppose so but it’s a big ask of them. I think four senior centre-backs and two under-21s would be fine. I just don’t want that fourth centre-back to be Hause. He’s got knees like Ledley King and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if he decided to retire instead.

We needed another left back regardless whether McLoughlin stayed. He filled in there in an emergency, he was a **** left back, he’s not really an option there.

Yes we did, but the picture has changed. We need to get through this restriction as painlessly as possible and Macca provides a known quantity in a squad that needs much more doing to than at left back.

A known quantity still a ****e quantity. I’m guessing he had probably asked to leave anyway hence the pre-emotive signing of Ajayi, which didn’t make any sense at the time.

I don't think he's as ****e as you think he was, so we'll have to agree to disagree.

What he lacked going forward he made up for in our defensive record.

again it’s partially the reason we was so ****, far easier to have a good defensive record without absolutely any attacking outlet, part caused by having one of the slowest centre halves in the league playing at full back.

Perfectly good centre half, ****e left back. Although I prefer Jones and McLoughlin has never been in my first choice defence at any point during his time here. Hopefully he will go on to do that at Blackburn, he’s been unlucky to always have fantastic options ahead of him whilst he’s been here.

I think there's multiple reasons that we had a poor attacking record, Macca being part of it, but also not helped by poor wingers and an ever rotating midfield.

I think we could cope with Macca at full back in an emergency (and if we start the season crap and need to shore up the defence again....) if we fixed some of the other problems.

So it had nothing to do with the likes of Burstow, Pedro, Bedia and Joseph being really poor?

We're now blaming a full back for us not scoring goals...

No it does have something to do with that too, but if you’ve got someone like Giles playing you’re likely to create more at the expense of losing defensive solidity.

Not really, the likes of Dawson, Ricketts and Rosey weren't great attacking full backs but we still scored goals.

Giles is garbage, for whatever reason he's a shadow of the player he once was and he's a complete defensive liability. I don't see why we keep giving him chances when he's done nothing to deserve another one

Them three were all great full backs but from a completely different era of football, Macca also isn’t comparable to any of them, they are three premier league fullbacks.

Giles hasn’t been great for us but yesterday a few times he got a dangerous ball into the box and was sharp in the link up, he looks to go forward and you can clearly see there’s something in there.

Giles might really improve under the new manager as might Macca at Blackburn, horses for courses as they say.

Unless Giles has learnt to defend over the summer, it won't work. He's a wingback but we don't play with wingbacks. It's not like he's just iffy defensively either so he can get away with it, he's woeful.

He's played under 2 good managers in Edwards & Rosenior and looked poor, plus Carrick too. He's been in environments where he should thrive but didn't. It feels like blind optimism that it'll magically turn around instead of just drawing a line under it and moving him on. Obviously we'll still end up paying some of his wage.
