I'm not exactly well informed of the complexities in Syria but it's always seemed to me to be like Afghanistan in that it probably shouldn't be one country due to the vast cultural differences in different parts.
The Ottoman empire at least had Islam as a common factor to use in controlling those locales (you may hate us but we worship the same god as you - not like the British etc) .
I might be wrong the way i remember it was that during the arab spring when ukraine had a revolution, bahrain had one and then Syria had one. We picked ukraine (successful), didnt back the bahrain one (that was put down) and tried to back the syrian one which went on for a while but eventually failed. It was all simmering for a while but i believe al bashir had it under control with the help of the russians until 2022 happened. Thats my memory of it all but i could be wrong
The Six Day War in 1967 was fought between 260,000 Israeli soldiers on one side, and 460,000 Arab coalition soldiers on the other. Israel was also outnumbered 800 warplanes to 300, and 2500 tanks to 800. At some point we need to just hold our hands up and say that Arabs seem to be complete **** at fighting for or defending anything.
"Bashir had it under control" Yeah that can be achieved if you massacre 500,000 of your own citizens. All under control. Nice and peaceful.
And then of course there is the irony that Syria only entered the conflict (and subsequently lost the Golan) because the official Egyptian report was that they'd dealt a crushing defeat to Israel's eastern front, which was in full retreat and that General Nasser would be sipping tea in Tel Aviv 'within hours'. Echoes of this in Iran's declaration of victory after a few missiles exploded in the skies over a US base in Qatar.
I dont really know much about syria pre civil war, whether it was as corrupt as gaddaffi and how many people were being rounded up and killed. I just know that before it all kicked off thousands werent dying and thousands werent fleeing to europe and in general everyone minded their own business (unless it was rwanda style which is possible where no one cared so it never hit the news). I guess there was also less internet back then too.
Assad had it all under control with brutality and the genocide of anybody that didn’t support him. https://snhr.org/blog/2024/12/20/su...nst-the-syrian-people-over-the-last-14-years/
Thanks for your reference source saf. Read what i wrote. I suppose he didnt have it well under control post civil war. So we agree it was all play pre arab swing?. Arab spring also ****ed up ukraine as well. Whose idea was behind all of this?
