Bit early but it's been along summer and with not much else going on thought I'd get a jump on the first matchday thread of the season!

NUFC are travelling up to Glasgow for their first preseason friendly of the 2025/26 season at Celtic Park on Saturday 19th July for a 3pm kick off. Having been initially offered 7,200 tickets, there now over 10,000 expected to take up residence in the Lisbon Lions Stand in Parkhead.

The last time the teams met in a preseason friendly Newcastle came away with a 4-1 win at SJP in 2007 - Sam Allardyce's first game in charge - with Albert Luque (2), Obafemi Martins and James Milner on the scoresheet, club legend Stevie Harper also got a run out up top from what I've found in reports and a young Andy Carroll had to fill in at CB when Nicky Butt and Steven Taylor respectively went off injured late on leaving the toon down to 10 men.

It'll be interesting to see the line up/s for each half although I'd guess it'll be mainly first team players as Howe can start getting them up to speed and even possibly see Anthony Elanga in action for the first time if the club can push the deal over the mythical line any time soon, along with long term injury absentees such as Lewis Miley, Jamal Lacselles, Sven Botman, Emil Krafth, Matt Target and other first team players who missed the last few games of the season like Joelinton and Isak. Lewis Hall is back in training but unlikely to feature much, if at all in preseason.

No idea on the ref's yet so no one to moan about for some, but I'm sure when they are announced we can call them all the names under the sun.

Hey guys — hope you’re good and looking forward to next weekend up here in Glasgow.

Hope you don’t mind the quick message, and to be completely transparent, I work for a group with a pub called Committee Room 9, based in the city centre of Glasgow. From previous pre-seasons and visiting European supporters, we know how difficult it is for visiting supporters to know where they can enjoy a pint and safely catch-up before and after matches in new cities so just letting you know, and if it helps in your planning at all, we’re here for you, and all Newcastle supporters, to enjoy while you’re in Glasgow.

We have a fantastic selection of draught beers, a large outdoor area and a live DJ on from 7pm until late. We’re also open until 2am so ideal for celebrating your 6-0 win into the wee hours for those staying over

As we say with everyone we get in touch with, free to share and tag us on Instagram or Facebook (@committeeroom9) and we can manage any bookings or help anyone out with their visit as best we can.

For more information feel free to drop me a DM, the General Manager a line on [email protected], or alternatively, book directly via our website: https://committeeroom9.co.uk

    Thanks for message.
TBH I think the plan was find the nearest pub to the hotel and then work our way towards the ground before the match and then reverse that plan after the match.
Not aware of any 'issues' between the 2 sets of fans and NUFC fans these days are amongst the friendliest around.

NB Speak to PB before leaving hotel. <laugh>

I'm going with a geriatric ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^(not mentioning any names)^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^who tends to spray his drinks around. Does your pubs have straws to try and avoid this situation?

Also the other one I'm going with tends to turn violent towards away fans at the slightest sniff of a bar maids apron. Does the pub have a naughty step to give him a time out?

Buzzing to see the NUFC fans in the city, always been a pleasure to be around whenever I’ve been to St. James. Even if you don’t visit the pub, if anyone need a hand with simple Glasgow tips or questions just let me know

I’ve also included a photo just in case that sways anyone. Safe travels!

Forecast of heavy rain this weekend in Glasgow.

What a surprise, Scotland, rain. Has there ever been a day in history where it didn’t rain in Scotland ? Anyone ever been to Scotland and it didn’t rain?

So two years later the team is more or less identical.

But from 7/11/21 (#CanDay) it's a bit different - first squad of the new regime:
Darlow, Manquillo, Lacselles, Clark, Ritchie, Hayden, Willock, Longstaff, ASM, Joelinton, Wilson

Compared to a likely like up for the first game of 25/26:
Pope, Tino, Schar, Botman, Hall, Burno, Tonali, Joelinton, Elanga, Gordon, Isak.

3.5 years on and bar Schar and Joelinton there's an entire new starting XI not including Trippier, Burn, Barnes, Osula etc

Wtf does that have to do with anything? I said two years ago, so the start of the 23/24 season was:

Pope, Trippier, Schar, Botman, Burn, Tonali, Bruno, Joelinton, Gordon, Almiron, Isak.

Tino, Hall were in the squad, not used. And we all said at the time both players were better than selecting Burn (then Targett) and a badly out of form Trippier. So two years later, one UCL campaign and a further qualification, we have swapped Almiron for Elanga. In absolutely anyone's book that is ****ing shambolic transfer activity.

Because we've had to reign it in having spent lots in the 2 years prior to those 2 years your talking about. It's a cycle - we went through a period where we spent, then we've had to not spend and now we are looking at spending again £55m in Elanga already done, £60-70m - on a striker being touted and we WILL sign a CB for £30-50m and probably Trafford for £30-40m.

Feels to me like we’ll sign one or two subs at best. We knew the rules, why were we so unprepared?. Where we’ve again struggled is getting around them, poor selling, poor commercial deals, etc.

Let’s see where we are at the end of the window. Said many many times I’ll be happy with a RW (Elanga - tick) and a RCB as an entire set of incomings for this window as a whole.

Next most important signing is getting Isak a new contract!

Past that a GK (Trafford - nearly) and a back up/rotation striker (clearly trying on this front and we could end up with a surprisingly good striker) would be an amazing window - probably the best I can remember in 30 years.

If we can shift a few more of the deadwood and replace any second string players going, I’ll need a Tash level amount of big roll.

Commercial desls have improved markedly since Ashley left. There are still areas to exploit though.
As for selling, it doesnt help that, with the exception of Miley, our academy has produced the square root of **** all in the last 10 years so very few sellable assets that don't completely kill the squad.

I think we have been prepared for the window, however we've been incredibly naive with our targets as well. We're not prepared to go head to head with the rich 6, we should have had players like Harvey Elliot through the door already that can grow but aren't £80m yet
