    Luciano Vulcano's journey to Wearside:

Luciano Vulcano is used to the big stage. A Serie A title with AC Milan. Tactical work under Roberto Mancini at Inter. Coaching Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia.

Life at the top table of football has shaped the 37-year-old Italian in profound ways - but his next chapter starts here: on Wearside, in red and white.

And right now, it begins in the golden light of Portugal, where Sunderland are deep into pre-season preparations for their first Premier League season in eight years.

“The first feelings are really good,” he smiled, relaxed but driven. People here are very welcoming, and I really like the atmosphere inside the Club. Now in Portugal - there’s a nice atmosphere, nice weather. A good opportunity for the guys to train in such a beautiful place.”

Despite his glittering CV, he’s hungry. Eager to improve, determined to better himself.

“The Premier League is a dream for every coach,” he said. “It’s the best league in the world. It’s a huge challenge - but also a fantastic opportunity to improve, to test myself, and bring my ideas to an amazing environment.”

That environment is being shaped by Head Coach Régis Le Bris, and Vulcano didn’t hesitate when asked about the Frenchman.

“He’s one of the most intelligent coaches I’ve worked with,” he said, without pause. “He’s very calm, very focused, and has a clear idea of how he wants to play. But what impressed me most was how human he is. He listens. He explains everything with detail, and the players respect that. He’s not just a tactical coach - he manages people in a very humble and respectful way. It’s a pleasure to work with someone who sees the game so clearly, but who also treats people so well.”

It’s the sort of footballing philosophy Vulcano understands deeply. Born in the heart of Italian football and a graduate of Coverciano - Italy’s world-famous coaching school - his early days weren’t on the training pitch, but behind the screen.

“During university, I focused on methodology. (Stefano) Pioli believed in me and brought me into his staff. That changed everything. I always believed in my skills, but that trust gave me the platform.”

Vulcano began his career as a scout and match analyst at Inter Milan, working under Mancini, Frank de Boer, and Stefano Pioli. When Pioli later took charge at Fiorentina, he brought the young Italian with him - a show of trust that would go on to shape his journey in top-level football.

It’s no surprise, then, that Vulcano’s philosophy has been shaped by watching how the best prepare.

His most recent post came in Saudi Arabia, working at the top level - with none other than Cristiano Ronaldo.

“He’s a really, really, really good guy. So focused. He does everything with high standards,” Vulcano said. “He has many routines - ice baths at night, recovery every day. He’s 40 and still plays every match. He showed me that high standards are everything, not just talent. It puts you under pressure - and when that happens, you either give up or push through. I chose the second.”

That attention to detail, that demand for excellence, is something he now brings to the Academy of Light.

“I want to squeeze the lemon - get the most out of this experience and help Sunderland reach the top,” he said, with genuine conviction.

Life in England is a fresh start not just professionally, but personally too. He’s relocated with his girlfriend and young son - and already, one member of the family is settling in fast.

“He’s three and already learning English - probably better than me! Maybe even a Mackem accent!” he laughed.

And when asked about his own approach?

“I’m from Southern Europe, so maybe I’m a bit more passionate,” he grinned. “But I’ll follow Régis’ lead. I’m here to help, to learn, and to give everything I can.”

From San Siro to Saudi Arabia, and now Sunderland, Luciano Vulcano’s story is about more than names and places. It’s about people. Standards. Growth. Passion. And now, it’s about bringing all that to Wearside.
