I agree. I think we should be foolish to put all our eggs in the Joseph/Burstow basket but at the same time I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see some of the players we are writing off eventually come good either for us or someone else in the Championship.

Writing off a player (particularly a young one) who has played for 12 or 6 months in a side both devoid of confidence, ideas and effective attacking build up play is daft in my eyes.

As I say, I’m treating this season like last year didnt exist.

Attacking players need stability and consistency. I think yesterday was the first time Joseph had received a pass to score in 1 touch during his time here

    Some comments form Pharell Brown...

"The same with the gaffer, he fills the boys with confidence. He says when you're in the final third, just express yourself and don't be afraid, get your shots off and try to beat your man.

"He just says, 'Don't be afraid, and football is a game of mistakes'. Literally, when you go on the pitch, just be confident because you are going to make mistakes.

"All the time in training, he tells us not to play backwards and play forward, and that's the way he wants to play. He wants to play progressive football. You'll get more chances by playing forward. You're never going to get chances by just playing backwards and around the back." FINALLY!@!

I read that earlier. Sounds promising from the manager, particularly the bit about mistakes. Got the impression certainly from Walter that the players were scared to make mistakes, and possibly under Selles too, leading to some dull, risk averse football.

Obviously very much liking the comments re ****ing around at the back as well

    Easy to say this
But if we go and lose 3-0 to coventry
    Then what

    ;)

But i do think players shouldnt feel scared to make mistakes, have each others back no matter what

Then what? Accept it's the first game, very tough one, about as tough as it gets in this division, move on.

Not everyone will be forecasting complete and utter capitulation, although I appreciate some will :emoticon-0138-think

You def need to give tricky players like brown the chance to make the wrong decisions

Be that shooting instead of passing etc
They have that bit of magic that allows them to pull of great goals and tear apart a defense
    Along side the frustrating parts

Every top winger/attacker has been allowed to make those mistakes

I do think the new manager has much more of a balance between over the top forward football and being more risk averse
Its why hes had good success at all his clubs

I wonder what midfielders we are looking at

Hes stated a few times he wants height and power as attributes in the middle

Playing forward wherever possible is definitely an improvement on last year, and I dont mind if we lose to one of the best teams in the league, as long as we're not doing stupid stuff like sending CBs on runs forward and leaving a large gap, like we did vs Norwich under Walter

Why so negative? What if we smash Coventry 3-0? FFS be positive for a change.

People love to lap up this gerrit forward stuff, but every manager says it. Walter was attack attack attack remember. Selles was all about vertical football, which is modern manager speak for getting it forward quickly.

It's always the reality that's the problem. When a defence sits back you don't have many ways to play. Even Man City have that problem. In the Championship loads of teams will do it to us. Hopefully we can score first more often to make it less of an issue. But no managerial philosophy is going to eliminate the problem of a team sitting deep and not letting us pass through them.

Have to chuckle at the "Finally!!" comments about a manager saying he wants players to get forward and attack as if every manager we have doesn't say that and as if it's that simple. If scoring goals was as simple as telling your players to get forward then football games would finish 10-9. Look how it panned out under Shota when we naively just bombed forwards.. conversely look how many goals we scored under Rosenior playing a more structure game. Football isn't that simple or any old sod could be a manager.

Players are also going to praise the manager especially in pre-season because no **** they want the manager to like them and slating a manager's tactics isn't going to help them get selected.
