This won't be popular. Personally, I think it's the right call. With Bednarek and maybe THB off already, we need some continuity at the back. He is definitely good enough for the top end of the championship too so will be an asset this season.
3 more years? Terrible decision. He's probably okay in the Championship but he's never been good enough for the Premier League and is now the wrong side of 30.
What a window! 1 possibly 2 nobody's from the German 2nd division and Captain Fantastic with a new deal. Same old SR.
Three years is totally unnecessary, I could've understood a one-year extension but not the two extra years. He's 32 this season
This will go down well; meltdown incoming. I, personally, am happy; 3 years is possibly a little bit long at his age, but meh, he's one of my favourite players so I can't be too disapointed
Excellent. Glad we still haven't learnt our lesson about giving needless contract extensions to players that are not really good enough and are getting on a bit. He's good enough for the Championship right now, but we probably want to be transitioning away from him over the next year anyway with THB (if he stays) and Edwards and maybe Quarshie too. He's not good enough for the PL, he's probably one of our highest earners, and he's getting on a bit. Fine for him to still be here this season, but a 3 year extension just seems so needless.
Stephens might end up having the worst attended testimonial of all time. Will just be SF4L and a couple of stray dogs.
By all accounts he is a model professional (since Charlie Austin left), and really cares about the club and I imagine that has been a big factor in this given the lack of other players who are truly dedicated to Saints. It's definitely not the end of the world or anything so not going to lose my **** over it. But it does seem pretty unnecessary, as someone else said. A 1 year extension would have been fine.
Captain for the worst season in our history and only notable contribution was getting sent off for pulling someone’s hair. A well earned pay rise
I wonder if he'll be shoehorned into the team because he is the captain again. I'll be pissed off if he plays ahead of Edwards.
Is he a model professional? 2 Red cards in 19 matches, one for petulantly pulling hair. In the worst season ever? That doesn't sound professional. If anything this is the kind of deal that shows the state of the club right now. No better Captain options than Jack Stephens? Really!? And when you look at the squad there kinda isn't. Says so much about how crap or recruitment continues to be.
